The Hidden Dates

by Angela (Oh She Glows) on May 29, 2010

Operation hydrate continues…

As part of my lunch I had a huge English Cucumber bathed in my Better than Bottled balsamic vinaigrette and freshly ground black pepper.

I also whipped up a batch of my cheezy savoury oats!

Did I mention that before 2010, I never ate oatmeal? Little did I know, I just had to figure out a couple ways to enjoy it and then I got hooked!

VOO + Savoury oats changed my life!

In today’s bowl I mixed in 1/2 cup black beans and1/2 cup tomato sauce and lots of sea salt and pepper. It was so crazy good, but it made me very hot.

It is very warm in this house today so I made my second batch of banana soft serve for dessert to cool me down! I am definitely getting my potassium in today.

Today was a new twist on it.

Crunchy Chia Banana Soft Serve

  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 frozen banana

Directions: Process in a food processor and scrape down sides of bowl as needed. Sprinkle with cacao nibs.

It was really thick and crunchy from the chia seeds!

Chia seeds are supposed to be a great pre and post workout food (they are hydrating + tons of antioxidants and omega fats), so I am getting in lots before tomorrow’s race.

And now for my second video…Please don’t mind my huge dorkiness.

Off to the wedding ceremony!

PS- I snuck some dates in my purse in case I need some extra carbs tonight.

This is what my life has come to. Sneaking dates into a wedding!

Robyn May 29, 2010 at 1:34 pm

I keep thinking that chia seeds look like fish eggs, when I see them mixed into something!! Ewww…I know they’re good for you (or so I’ve heard), but I get that visual and I can’t get passed it. :P

Lindsay @ Summit Sandwiches May 29, 2010 at 1:46 pm

All your beautiful pictures of this banana softserve stuff really make me want to try it. How many bananas makes 1 serving of soft serve?

Angela (Oh She Glows) May 29, 2010 at 3:29 pm

1 banana :)

Angela (Oh She Glows) May 29, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Thank you!

Lisa (Leeses Peeces) May 29, 2010 at 3:43 pm

best of luck on your race girl!
isn’t pre-race carboloading always an excuse for keeping dried fruit handy??

Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin May 29, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Those savory oats look so good but every time I go to try them out, I decide I’m craving sweet oats instead haha!

Have fun at the wedding tonight. :)

Lili May 29, 2010 at 6:19 pm

I love your videos! I definitely am going to have to make the chocolate covered raisins. :)
The Dollar store idea was great, but I’d be concerned that there might be lead in the plates. Have you ever checked?

Angela (Oh She Glows) May 31, 2010 at 8:47 am

Ohhh no, I haven’t! Do you know how I might check?

Lili May 31, 2010 at 2:49 pm

I’m pretty sure you can just pick up a lead test kit (they have them at the hardware store near where I live, so you might try there). You could probably get one online, too. Good luck :)

Sue May 29, 2010 at 6:47 pm

Dates in your purse and a date on your arm (Eric!)

Camille May 29, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Everything looks delicious, as usual!

Mary @ Bites and Bliss May 29, 2010 at 6:58 pm

It’s amazing how you can add a certain food into your diet and then not be able to live without it from that point on! I use to hate oatmeal, now it’s the only thing that gives me energy for the day. Have fun at the wedding ceremony! Glad to hear you decided to go :)

Nicole of Raspberry Stethoscope May 29, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Angela, I made your chocolate covered raisins yesterday and posted pics!!

so fuh-reakin’ good!!

Diana @ frontyardfoodie May 29, 2010 at 7:33 pm

haha clever wording.

I LOVE cucumbers with vinaigrette. I literally eat that all summer when my cucumber plants are producing like crazy.

Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] May 29, 2010 at 8:07 pm

It’s always so fun to hear the voice behind a blog – you’re adorable.

Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter May 29, 2010 at 8:14 pm

I love VOO during hot days to cool me off. I just wish it was warmer here. We have suddenly fell into a cold spell :(

Roxanne May 29, 2010 at 8:33 pm

I love your overnight oats and banana soft serve. I actually broke my food processor the first time I tried to make the soft serve though. Now I make sure to thaw the banana slightly and add a bit of almond milk while I’m processing it. I find it really helps the processor to be able to get the banana smooth.

Susan May 29, 2010 at 8:54 pm

Good luck on your half tomorrow!!!!
I am so making those raisins.
And I keep dried figs in my purse ;)

Michelle May 29, 2010 at 9:19 pm

Not dorky AT ALL!!! In fact, I love how naturally sweet you are on camera and of course, you’re gorgeous so that definitely helps huh? :) I’ve tried making dark chocolate covered preserved cumquats and they’re so delicious!!!

Amber K May 29, 2010 at 10:57 pm

You are so funny in your videos. I love it! And the chocolate covered raisins look so tasty.

GirlonRaw May 30, 2010 at 12:07 am

Oh you are too adorable. Cool video! And I know the feeling with sneaking food in your purse. I often take an avocado or lara bars with me to dinner in case my food needs ‘beefing’ up! :)

jassy May 30, 2010 at 3:55 am

as long as it’s good food=)

Casey May 30, 2010 at 10:36 am

That video was precious! Too cute.
I’ve definitely been one to sneak food into my purse too, the funniest part is trying to be sneaky about eating it once your there. Chocolate covered raisin are so next on my ‘to smuggle into public locations’ list.

*Andrea* May 30, 2010 at 11:57 am

Meaghan May 30, 2010 at 1:35 pm

Your Banana Chia Soft Serve looks amazing! I definitely have to try that this week.

Amanda May 31, 2010 at 7:45 pm

Thanks for posting a video for the chocolate covered raisins, and for mentioning the addition of crisp rice cereal. I was running low on raisins, so I added dried cranberries and dried blueberries, along with the rice cereal. Completely amazing. Thanks for the inspiration!

Paije June 2, 2010 at 2:06 am

Angela you are too cute! i loved the vlog! And I made the chocolate covered raisins (and mulberries) and loooove them. Thanks for another great recipe! xx

Cecilia June 2, 2010 at 4:56 am
