Bad To The Bone

by Angela (Oh She Glows) on May 1, 2010

Goooooood evening!

So yes. We got caught in a torrential downpour on our bike ride today! The heavens just opened up and it was beautiful. We knew we were getting soaked one way or another so we just had fun with it. I felt like a kid again.

On another note, swimming seems to have unleashed the hunger monster in me. I see a peak in my appetite the next day, similar to how I feel the day after a long run. Eric called me on Friday from work and he said, ‘Guess where I am?’ and he was beside Fresh restaurant. He kindly took a ‘to-go’ order for me and brought it home for me. The only snag was that they took 45 minutes to get him his to-go order. I can’t believe he was patient enough to wait that long…I felt so bad!

For dinner tonight, I had the…

untitled-thumb2 IMG_5860

I had it without the vegan mayo.

As you can see, the half on the right is no longer a half. That’s because I almost inhaled it after my swim last night. I seriously had to use all my will power to save this wrap for today!

It was so, so good.

I am totally envious of how good they fold wraps! I wish I could find a good tortilla (i.e., huge, stretchy, and THIN) like they use. I find our selection of tortilla wraps is so limited in Canada as opposed to the US. Well, the US has a much better selection of all foods, but that is another can of worms!

This is the pesto wrap that Eric had at Fresh last year, with cheese:

Pesto rocks my socks. I need to make it again.

We also went back to…

Swim & Sports

We decided to rent our wetsuits for our Try-a-tri instead of purchasing them. We want to see how this Triathlon goes and then if we end up wanting to do them on a regular basis we are going to purchase them down the road. Tri wetsuits are BIG bucks!!!

They are $35 to rent at Swim & Sports and you get the wetsuit for a full week. I think that is reasonable. We pick them up on Wednesday June 2nd. We are planning to do 2 open water swims in the lake with our wetsuits on- hopefully the Wednesday and Friday before the race. As good as swimming laps in a pool is, it will be NOTHING, absolutely nothing, like the open-water swim. I am quite nervous about having so many people around me, choppy water, elbows to the face, etc.

Our race is Sunday June 6th.

We are going to have to practice putting the wetsuit on and taking it off before the race! Thankfully they showed us the proper technique or it would have been an utter disaster!

I LOVE the wetsuit.

In fact, I would do a triathlon just to be able to wear the wetsuit! I felt amazing in it!

Does that not scream Bad to the Bone, or what?

Although, I would change one thing…

Ladies, you feel me?! ;)

We are off to a friend’s place tonight for some good ol’ R & B (Relaxation and brews)!!

I leave you with a quote that brought tears to my eyes today. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do…

“You never know what you can do before you try it. And each time you go out, it’s an experiment, a work in progress. You learn an awful lot about yourself- about your limits, your endurance, your capabilities…I think that everybody has a certain level of fear. The question is how we manage it. And I have managed to be able to control it enough in order to do my job.”

Oh yeeeaaaah, rock the wetsuit! You are definately an Ironwoman!

Camille May 1, 2010 at 8:05 pm

That wetsuit makes you look like a hardcore athlete!

Kristie May 1, 2010 at 8:11 pm

The wetsuit is awesome! I would feel like such a star sporting one of those.

And that wrap looks to die for! I completely feel you on Canada’s lack of wrap selection, what’s up with that?! I’ve been able to find large thin wraps ONCE at ONE gourmet grocery store… for a fairly hefty fee! Sigh.

Brie (The Fit Bride) May 1, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Re: the wraps. They fold a LOT better if you wet a towel/paper towel (just enough so it’s damp), put the wrap inside, and microwave it for about 20 seconds. The heat and wet makes a little steam, which softens it up and makes it much more pliable for rolling and folding!

Angela (Oh She Glows) May 2, 2010 at 10:13 am

Great tip!

Lexi May 1, 2010 at 8:25 pm

i lovoe that quote!! i love her too…what an amazing looking wrap..Fresh is just to DIE for! haha

Jil May 1, 2010 at 8:26 pm

Sana May 1, 2010 at 8:28 pm

WOW! You look so BADASS!

Allison @ Food For Healing May 1, 2010 at 8:28 pm

thats awesome that you can just rent the wet suits, best plan for your first one at least.

I wish we had some better restaurants here in Sask

Joyce May 1, 2010 at 8:38 pm

You are rocking that wetsuit! Go girl!

Mandy May 1, 2010 at 8:41 pm

Fresh!!! I love that restaurant! Just discovered it the other week when looking for healthy restaurants in Toronto. Dinner was sooo delish and the juices are good too :)

I took my mom there and she loved it too!

Coco @ Opera Girl Cooks May 1, 2010 at 8:51 pm

As an opera singer I can certainly relate to that quote! What an inspiring woman she is.

Stacey May 1, 2010 at 8:59 pm

Wow that is a fantastic wrap. I sure wish they had that restaurant in the US.

Mary May 1, 2010 at 9:06 pm

You’re definitely a bad mother tri-do-er :)

Jessica @ The Process of Healing May 1, 2010 at 9:10 pm

I loooooove that quote! Thank you for sharing!!
And Angela, thank you SO much for the tweet last night, it meant so so SO much to me!

Lisa (bakebikeblog) May 1, 2010 at 9:25 pm

LOVE that dinner! Looks so yummy!!!

Amber K May 1, 2010 at 9:46 pm

Those wraps look absolutely fantastic! So yummy.

I am new to reading your blog and I think its funny that I never knew you were in Canada! Silly me, it doesn’t even occur to me to think about where the bloggers I read are from. Now I’m going to have to start doing some clicking and learning!

Angela (Oh She Glows) May 2, 2010 at 10:13 am

Hello fellow Canuck! ;)

Jenn May 1, 2010 at 10:03 pm

To help with transition coming out of the water to the bike….Body Glide. Smear your ankles, thights and wrists. I think you wrote that you were going to do a tri session….highly recommend going to learn some tips and tricks!! I love the wetsuit cat-suit look!!

Angela (Oh She Glows) May 2, 2010 at 10:14 am

That is a great tip, I would have never thought to do that. I’ll have to pick some up :)

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is May 1, 2010 at 10:33 pm

Can;t imagine getting caught in the rain! My hubby has ran 2 marathons in the rain and it is just miserable!

Lisa May 1, 2010 at 11:43 pm

I have been searching for those ginormous wraps too! Maybe some of your readers in the GTA know a place to buy them?! I know they are around — it’s just a matter of sourcing them.

Anyone know where to find them?

Angela (Oh She Glows) May 2, 2010 at 10:14 am

I wish I knew where to get them!!! I can’t imagine Fresh makes their own?

Mimi (Damn the Freshman 15) May 2, 2010 at 12:14 am

Haha, I can’t wrap at all. I want to go to Taco Bell and ask for a tutorial. Not Chipotle–it’s way too easy with a huge-ass tortilla.

Dang girl, you look fine in your wetsuit! The one time I wore one, I felt like a penguin.

Wei-Wei May 2, 2010 at 1:24 am

Ohhh, that wrap looks divine! I’d totally skip the mayo, too… Even though I’m not a vegan I’ve always hated mayo! I thought it just tasted like tasteless creamy stuff… blegh!

You look AWESOME in that wetsuit! Go Ironwoman ;D

Run Sarah May 2, 2010 at 1:59 am

I love that quote! Wetsuits are fun but so annoying if you have to use the washroom and its on. I agree about our lack of great wraps and breads in Canada. Part of the reason I love going down to Seattle to shop is to buy food products…hence why I stopped at a 24 hr Walmart at midnight after a full day of work and travelling just to pick up a few things :)

Angela (Oh She Glows) May 2, 2010 at 10:15 am

LOL…omg I didnt even think about the bathroom thing. That is so going to be me at the start line.

Lindsay May 2, 2010 at 5:04 am

Love it! Your turning into a hard core tri geek! BAD TO THE BONE!!

Kelly May 2, 2010 at 6:29 am

You look AWESOME!! And you will be so, so happy you have the wetsuit…they probably told you this but, the wetsuit will do three things for you, protect you when you might come in contact with another swimmer, help keep you warm, and you will be amazed at the buoyancy it provides!! It is so much fun to swim with a wetsuit, I think you will really like it!! A little tip when you get to the end of the swim, keep swimming until your fingers touch the sand, then stand up and run… a lot of people stand up way too soon and it takes a lot more energy to run through deep water than to just keep swimming in a little further. :-) Yay! Love following you on this new journey!

Angela (Oh She Glows) May 2, 2010 at 10:15 am

That is so good to know…I feel so much better :) Thank you!

Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) May 2, 2010 at 7:02 am

Too bad you had to wait 45 mins for your wrap- that’s insane! I had to wait 15 minutes for 2 smoothies there once and I thought that was bad. Hmm… maybe Fresh is just severly understaffed. Still looks great, though!

Great wetsuit, you look badass for sure :)

Nicole of Raspberry Stethoscope May 2, 2010 at 7:53 am

You look amazing!!! you should just wear a wet suit all the time lol

Heather @ Side of Sneakers May 2, 2010 at 8:28 am

You look like a ROCKSTAR in that thing. I’ve avoided signing up for tris that I would need a wetsuit for…now I kinda want to so I can be [email protected] too ;)

Angela (Oh She Glows) May 2, 2010 at 10:16 am

The wetsuits are actually much better than I thought they would be! They are more comfy than I thought. I’m in love! lol

Jane May 2, 2010 at 8:38 am

You look awesome in the suit. Tip for rolling wraps…heat them in mircowave (30sec) or in a cast iron frying pan to heat slightly. This prevents the wrap from breaking apart.

Heather (Heather's Dish) May 2, 2010 at 8:43 am

that’s a great quote…i love how you always does such a great job of verbalizing exactly what i feel or what i need to hear!

and yes, you look like a total tri-badass in that wetsuit! love it!

Jae May 2, 2010 at 9:02 am

You’re so gorgeous! :)
and Im totally digging that wrap :)
I LOVE sprouts and zucchini!

CK May 2, 2010 at 9:47 am

Rocking the wetsuit!!! Woo hoo Tri!

Rosie May 2, 2010 at 10:22 am

Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin May 2, 2010 at 10:25 am

That wrap looks to die for!

I hear ya on the wraps in Canada. I wish we had the rectangular ones here so I could fit more fillings in. I was thinking of trying to make your spelt tortillas since they look pretty big! :)

Jolene ( May 2, 2010 at 11:43 am

Girl – you even look great in a wetsuit!!!

Ironwoman all the way!!

Lisa May 2, 2010 at 12:06 pm

That’s an AWESOME outfit!

Grace aka Triathlonbabe May 2, 2010 at 9:02 pm

I wish we had a cool place like Fresh here in North Texas…there might be I just don’t know where. I may have to Google until I find one, cause seeing the delicious wrap like that one….YUMMM!

Great tips from all of the other tri-family members. Another good tip is to set up a mock transition area so you have all of your items ready for pick up through T-1, T-2 and T-3. I’ve had issues in my races where sometimes folks are a bit rude and just throw their stuff and knock over your stuff. I also have a triathlon checklist if you’d like a copy….it’s kind of a list of all the things you’ll need to have the day of your race.

Lovin’ the wetsuit look. I own a wetsuit, very expensive, but worth it if you continue doing triathlons. Very good tip with body glide….it works. You might get lucky in some races where they actually have volunteers who help you remove your suit. The open water I did in Galveston Bay back in 08 had volunteers, as you came out of the swim…they were waiting and you just dropped to the mat set up on the ground and they pulled it off. It was awesome but funny at the same time. Oh my wetsuit is sleeveless, which, here in Texas, is not so bad as the waters are not quite as frigid, however, the cold water does seep in and wooooo, it’s colllllldddd!

I am so looking forward to your triathlon just to hear how much you and Eric loved it!!

bodyhacker May 2, 2010 at 9:16 pm

Your wrap looks amazing and definitely made me hungry! :-)

Not sure if you ever tried La Tortilla Factory Low Carb/High Fiber Tortillas. They are only 80cals per tortilla and taste great! We use them for all of our wraps although we actually use them with several of our recipes for all meals – breakfast (egg burritos), lunch (all types of wraps such as turkey, fruit, veggie..etc) and dinner (make pizzas with them) although they can be also used for snacks (you just have to get creative).

If you are interested, we list one of my favorite recipes (Italian Veggie Pizza) on our site. It’s an easy, quick and tasty dinner! :-)

Hope you like the recipe! Thanks for great post and forward to reading more!

bodyhacker May 2, 2010 at 9:17 pm

Sorry forgot to mention that you can order these tortillas online from their store if your local grocery store doesn’t have them. Hope this helps!

Susan May 3, 2010 at 7:15 am

Totally agree on the tortilla front!! All the wraps here are thick, calorie dense, and full of extra ingredients. That’s why I always choose pita bread of tortillas. The pita bread here just has better stats.

Love the Christiane Amanpour quote. She’s one of my heroes. I can’t imagine her being scared of anything!
