Tall, Dark, And Handsome

by Angela (Oh She Glows) on February 11, 2010

It’s been one of those ‘I’d climb Mount Everest in stilettos to get my chocolate fix’ kinda weeks…’ (In case yesterday’s post wasn’t clear…)

Only a woman would understand this desperate need for CHAAAA-COOOO-LATE.

Tall, Dark, And Handsome… Hawt Cocoa

Unlike the male variety, this form of tall, dark, and handsome is guaranteed not to disappoint. I adapted the ‘hot coco-cocoa’ recipe from Eat Drink & Be Vegan. This is hands down the best cocoa I have ever had. Ever. In eternity.

  • 3/4 cup coconut milk (full strength, not light!)
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any milk)
  • 1/4 cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder (I used regular cocoa)
  • Pinch of sea salt to bring out the sweetness
  • 3 tablespoons of maple syrup (or agave but I like maple syrup)
  • marshmallows and cacao nibs/chocolate chips to garnish

Directions: Throw all ingredients into a pot and whisk like crazy. Bring to a boil and then simmer on low for several minutes while whisking to remove clumps. Try not to burn your tongue like I did while taste testing. :) Pour into a 1 or 2 mugs and top with marshmallows and chips. Enjoy with a spoon to make it last longer.

Serves two (or one female that would bulldoze anything in her path to get it)

Best tasting hot cocoa in the world. I don’t joke about this kind of thing.

It was luxurious, decadent, and totally necessary.

Eric suggested that we make this again on Valentine’s Day. Just imagine snuggling with a blanket, sipping on some hot cocoa, and watching a movie. Amazing, no?? It would be equally fun for a girl’s night too. Have a bunch of friends over and make a huge pot of this stuff!

Are you a chocoholic?

Will you be making anything on Valentine’s Day?

I have this theory that chocolate slows down the aging process…. It may not be true, but do I dare take the chance?

Life without chocolate would be pointless! Big up for the recipes Angela!

Jennie {in Wonderland} February 11, 2010 at 8:23 am

Argh, I wish I still live in Canada JUST so I could order Glo bars! I can’t wait until I’m back :-)

That hot cocoa looks so decadent. I love that you used full-fat coconut milk too. Plus your spoon pictures are seriously steady! How do you do that? Mine always get blurry, ha ha.

Kristy February 11, 2010 at 8:23 am

Gahhhh – Just my luck! Ordered 2 days too early :-(

Amy February 11, 2010 at 8:24 am

Ummm yah. I’m excited in my pants reading about that hot chocolate! ;)

Danielle (Coffee Run) February 11, 2010 at 8:24 am

I didn’t know making hot cocoa was that easy! Where’d you get the vegan marshmallows?

And yes, I’d def. consider myself a choco-holic :)

Angela (Oh She Glows) February 11, 2010 at 10:33 am

They are called Dandies :) roast amazing

Maureen February 11, 2010 at 12:33 pm

Heather Dawn February 11, 2010 at 8:25 am

Wow that looks amazing! My boyfriend is not a fan of hot chocolate, but this looks too good not to be a fan! I will have to try this out and see if I can convert him… Otherwise more for me :)
Can’t wait to read your Hot Topic post!
Have a beautiful day*

Sagan February 11, 2010 at 8:31 am

That hot chocolate looks PERFECT. I know what recipe I’m using the next time I get a craving :D

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is February 11, 2010 at 8:33 am

I love that this calls for coconut milk! It sounds absolutely divine!

Nicole, RD February 11, 2010 at 8:34 am

Wow! That looks fantastic and totally gluttonous! Love it! : )

Emmanuelle February 11, 2010 at 8:41 am

Oh dear… Added to my grocery list: coconut milk, yeah!

Kate February 11, 2010 at 8:43 am

I was craving chocolate yesterday, too! I don’t usually, but thanks to TOM, if I didn’t get chocolate, like, 5 minutes ago, someone was going to get hurt!! I’m definitely making this for Nate this weekend!

Jenn @ Livewellfit February 11, 2010 at 8:44 am

You need to write a cookbook! I love your recipes! :)

I’ve been satisfying my chocolate/peanut butter craving everyday with my smoothie but I’m not gonna lie…I think today might be the day for some real chocolate and your warm drink will do the trick!

Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg February 11, 2010 at 8:45 am

Ummm…every DAY is a day when I crave chocolate and nothing else will do :-)

This hot cocoa looks seriously to DIE for!!!

thedelishdish February 11, 2010 at 8:48 am

every day is a chocolate day for me!! ive been obsessed with hot chocolate this winter and this recipe looks like a keeper! and you guys are right…it would make a very sweet vday treat :)

Grace February 11, 2010 at 8:55 am

One more reason for me to get that cookbook. I understand the need for chocolate, no explanation needed.

Dana (www.eatsleepgetfit.com) February 11, 2010 at 8:58 am

Ummmm, that hot chocolate looks AHHHHMAAAAAZZZING! And I just scored a coupon for glo bakery and placed my first order! I’m so excited! I was reluctant to order up until now because the shipping is a little high :( But the coupon sold me :) Can’t wait til they get here!!!

Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind February 11, 2010 at 9:03 am

o…mi…GAWD. That’s all I have to say. ;)

Heather @ Side of Sneakers February 11, 2010 at 9:06 am

Mmmm looks good!! And that’s coming from a non-chocolate lover! Definitely sounds like a good v-day to me!!

Christina February 11, 2010 at 9:08 am

That cocoa looks yummy!

We’re planning on making heart shaped pizzas at home. Boyfriend can have all the meat he wants and I can have my veggie pizza ♥ I’m still thinking about a dessert. We’re also going to rent a romantic movie. I’m going to try to coerce my boyfriend into watching the Notebook, mwhahahahahahaha.

Christina February 11, 2010 at 9:09 am

Oh, I’m definitely a chocoholic! I have fudgy oatmeal almost every morning =)

Paige @ Running Around Normal February 11, 2010 at 9:11 am

I loooove that drink in ED&BV! Love, love, love :D

Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) February 11, 2010 at 9:11 am

Yummmm… oh chocolate! I’ve been making hot cocoa every night with rice or soy milk, cocoa powder and a little agave nectar. Such a great cold weather treat. :)

Shannon (The Daily Balance) February 11, 2010 at 9:16 am

yaaaay! I was able to take advantage of the v-day discount!

La February 11, 2010 at 9:18 am

I feel you 100% on that chocolate craving! I can’t get enough – I ate just about all the chocolate in my house and still want more? I don’t know.

To get my fix ever since we oh so mysteriously ran out of chocolate I’ve been simmering So Delicious coconut milk with one or two bags of Yogi Mayan Cocoa Spice tea, some cocoa powder, and sweetening with agave. I might need a new box of tea…

Your hot chocolate looks absolutely divine.

Teri [a foodie stays fit] February 11, 2010 at 9:21 am

Wow…that. looks. amazing.

Lindsay Perrone (goodiesgalore) February 11, 2010 at 9:21 am

Wow, you really were felling that cocoa– seduction city.

Greta February 11, 2010 at 9:25 am

Thank you for the recipe – my boyfriend will absolutely LOVE this. He actually will “bulldoze anything in HIS path” to get chocolate.

Looks SO delish!

Ameena February 11, 2010 at 9:31 am

I am such a chocoholic…this looks perfect for me! Love the pictures…just gorgeous!

Joelle (The Pancake Girl) February 11, 2010 at 9:32 am

Ashlei February 11, 2010 at 9:35 am

Wow that looks amazing!!

katherine February 11, 2010 at 9:36 am

I’m a total choc-o-holic. I need a little bit EVERY DAY!

Natasha February 11, 2010 at 9:39 am

Hi! I’m Natasha and I’m a chocoholic. I eat chocolate every evening for my dessert, and if I can’t have it I get a bit crazy… it’s my drug! My fiance knows better than to get in my way when I want it, and he knows better than to let the supplies dwindle.

Sophie @ yumventures February 11, 2010 at 9:42 am

Mmm that hot chocolate is perfect for the weather we have been having lately!

Christie @ Honoring Health February 11, 2010 at 9:43 am

Looks amazing!

Can’t wait for the hot topic post!

Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman February 11, 2010 at 9:53 am

You can’t really go wrong with chocolate. But this is just crazy. If I could taste it, I’d lick my screen. And if I had those ingredients on hand (and it didn’t require braving the snow) I’d make it right now!!

Carolyn February 11, 2010 at 9:55 am

Mouth. Is. Watering.

Jessie (Vegan-minded) February 11, 2010 at 9:55 am

Umm, yeah, that hot chocolate looks like the best thing ever! I love the marshmallows and chips on top, yum! Perfect Valentine’s treat. :)

Jil February 11, 2010 at 9:57 am

Ahh, that looks and sounds amazing. It’s funny cuz Sandra Lee on the FoodNetwork (not a fan) made a “tall, dark and handsome” cocktail the other day which looked “mehh…” — THIS on the other hand…YUM.

Kaytee Kedzz @ tryingonimperfection.blogspot.com February 11, 2010 at 10:17 am

when are the GLUTEN FREE glo bars coming?! i’ve been dying for them!! :)

Angela (Oh She Glows) February 11, 2010 at 10:32 am

not for a while…lots left to do for them. I will announce it on the blog :)

Kristilyn (My 29th Year) February 11, 2010 at 10:30 am

I am very much a chocoholic and my husband is the complete opposite. LOL! It’s so sad because he hates anything sweet and I always feel bad eating it. OF course, I’ve gotten a lot better as the years have gone by, but every now and then a girl needs some chocolaty goodness, right?

This looks amazing!!

Cynthia (It All Changes) February 11, 2010 at 10:31 am

I’m a chocoholic learning to be less of one so that I don’t irritate my stomach. But it is oh so delicious.

Morgan February 11, 2010 at 10:40 am

Oh girl, this has me looking at my boring black coffee hoping and willing it to turn into this amazing looking hot chocolate. I need to 1) get my hands on ED & BV and 2) make this ASAP!

Bronwyn February 11, 2010 at 10:50 am

I’ve seen several people say FOOD PORN.

And I must agree.

Gosh I NEED chocolate ASAP now. That looks delicious, and the ingredients sound amazing! yum!

Amy @ Everything is Homemade February 11, 2010 at 10:53 am

I have all those ingredients at home. I’m totally making this tonight.

Heather (Heather's Dish) February 11, 2010 at 10:53 am

SWOON! this looks gorgeous and perfect…mmmmmmmm :) i’m definitely a chocoholic and am hoping to make a rocking flourless chocolate cake on Valentines!

Fallon February 11, 2010 at 11:05 am

That hot chocolate sounds so good. I like that is uses coconut milk. What happens if you use light coconut milk? That the only kind I have in my pantry right now.

Julie @SavvyEats February 11, 2010 at 11:14 am

*Drool* Making this when I’m in NY with Dan this weekend!

So excited to try the Adore bars!

Jolene February 11, 2010 at 11:25 am

I am absolutely a chocoholic – my whole family is! My mom has always eaten a chocolate bar every single day … she is about 100 pounds, so it’s okay :-)

OSGMOM February 11, 2010 at 11:33 am

I have always been a HUGE Chocoholic. I always carry chocolate with me. I started eating 70% dark several years ago for the health benefits but still like milk and white chocolate too. Bernard Callebaut is one of my favourite brands. Hot chocolate is another weakness of mine, and I usually have a cup of cocoa at least once or twice a week. I have got to try Dark, Tall and Handsome — looks divine.

Deva (Voracious Vorilee) February 11, 2010 at 11:38 am

Hot cocoa is one of my FAVORITE ways to get a chocolate fix. This looks like such a decadent and DELICIOUS way to have it, too – so good!

Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] February 11, 2010 at 11:46 am

What a great idea: I def want to make this for my next girls night. I am a HUGE chocoholic – like a dangerous one : ) Don’t go a day without it.

I would like to make something in the spirit of V.day, but am not sure what yet. Almond Raspberry Jam Heart Scones?

Jacquie February 11, 2010 at 11:55 am

Yum! This looks delicious. I’ve been thinking of what I could do for hot chocolate since I’m not really drinking dairy anymore and this is perfect! Thank you!
Yes, I’m a chocoholic and am ok with it. I think for Valentine’s Day, I’m going to make my one-bowl chocolate cake- maybe even vegan… hmmmm….

Mo February 11, 2010 at 11:55 am

OMG!!!!!! That looks and sounds amazing. Your pictures are truly beautiful! I always love your spoon shots, they are works of art!

I must find vegan marshmallows! Do you find your Dandies in a store (if so, you are sooo lucky!) or do you order online?

Miriam February 11, 2010 at 11:55 am

I just ordered some glo bars… I’ve waited so long to do so! Mostly because of the price, but you conviced me : you are such a good and inspiring cook, no doubt those are all worth it! Now can’t wait to try them! :)

Meredith February 11, 2010 at 12:04 pm

That hot cocoa sounds delish! Also, just made my first purchase of glo bars – I’m so excited to try them!!

Jocelyn February 11, 2010 at 12:05 pm

I AM a chocoholic. I must have this on one of my treat days :D:D

Ashley February 11, 2010 at 12:05 pm

I’m having a blogger meetup at my house this weekend…and this looks like it might be a winner for one of the things I’m making!!! We’ll see!! Also might make your pnut butter cups! I have all of the ingredients for this drink. must.try.tonight. I am sympathizing with your NEED FOR CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!

skinnyrunner February 11, 2010 at 12:08 pm

i think thats the best looking recipe you’ve ever posted!!

Lynna February 11, 2010 at 12:19 pm

Ooh sounds yummy! I might just have to treat myself to that on Valentines day. It’s funny, I was listening to a nutrition podcast this morning and it was saying that chocolate cravings are sometimes linked to a lack of magnesium and wanting something sweet after a meal can be linked to a zinc deficiency. Don’t know how true or widely applicable that is– I think I just like sweets!– but it’s interesting nevertheless.

Lynna February 11, 2010 at 12:25 pm

Ally (Exercise and Pies) February 11, 2010 at 12:26 pm

can you say yum? That looks absolutely amazing!

And nope, not a chocoholic. I like cinnamony-sweet desserts and I actually don’t like plain milk or dark chocolate. I hated hershey kisses as a little girl

liane February 11, 2010 at 12:30 pm

I echo the food porn comments. Seriously. Cannot wait to make this!

Amy Ramos February 11, 2010 at 12:30 pm

AW bummer. I was going to use the coupon code and but it said all 30 people used it up. I love the Empower bar. The best of both worlds-chocolate and coffee!
oh well, I guess next time.

Lisa February 11, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Mmmm…. That sounds so good. I Love the valentines day idea, sounds so cozy and romantic. I am definately going to have to make a batch soon.

Tracey February 11, 2010 at 12:37 pm

How funny! I was just talking to my husband last night and telling him I have never craved Chocolate as much as I have this past week. It’s been CRAZY!!!

Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries February 11, 2010 at 12:38 pm

im not a chocoholic (except for about one week per month lol)–but i think you’ve just converted me.

Kt F @ Through The Finish February 11, 2010 at 12:38 pm

Omggg I almost regret reading this post lol bc that cocoa looks SO GOOD. I know what I’m making this weekend!

Anne P February 11, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Yum!! What a cute post :) That looks delicious. I’m actually NOT a huge chocolate person (I’d take ice cream, pie, or something fruity and sweet over chocolate any day)… but I do like hot chocolate on occasion. Especially with all this snow!! :)

Andrea @ CanYouStayForDinner.com February 11, 2010 at 12:44 pm

Oh My God, that hot chocolate looks to-die-for! You never fail to impress me. I’m so glad you posted the recipe, I’ll be making it after I shovel the mountain of snow outside!

I have been having one of those chocolate weeks, too – and so have several of my friends! Is there a chocolate flu going around? I canNOT get enough of it lately.

erica February 11, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Angela February 11, 2010 at 1:53 pm

Lauren-Eat, Drink, and Be Hopeful February 11, 2010 at 2:57 pm

Becka @Studio222 February 11, 2010 at 2:59 pm

We love to make homemade cocoa together. It’s especially good with a pinch of cayenne! OR with a dash of godiva liquor! ;)

Megan February 11, 2010 at 3:44 pm

That hot cocoa looks SO good, but I have this weird problem wehre i think it LOOKS great then i dont realy like it. I guess I like my chocolate straight up…hehehe

Megan @ Healthy Hoggin February 11, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Cheers to chocolate!

I’m only a chocolate fan a few days a month–haha. My husband on the other hand LOVES it ALWAYS. He wants chocolate rolled in chocolate, dipped in chocolate, then sprinkled in chocolate. LOL!

Be sure to come by my blog Monday! I’ll have a cute little Green Monster story to share!

so lucky i have left over coconut milk and using a milk frother makes it amazing and where can i get dandies

Tara November 27, 2012 at 5:47 pm

Thank you for all your wonderful recipes:) I am hosting a christmas party for non vegan friends and I was wondering if this recipe will pass the test and also could it be doubled/tripled and made in a slowcooker?

Angela (Oh She Glows) November 27, 2012 at 6:32 pm

Hey Tara, I think any chocolate lover would enjoy it! As for the slow cooker, I cant see why not…just keep it at a low heat to prevent burning. Let me know how it goes!

Jamee February 24, 2013 at 1:36 pm

Angela, you were right. This is the best hot cocoa in the world, ever, times infinity. Thank you for yet another marvelous recipe! It was perfect to sip on this cold, snowy night in Germany. I’m looking forward to making it again. Tomorrow.

Tawni April 2, 2013 at 4:28 pm

Holy mother of God this stuffs amazing!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!! Wow!!!!!

Priya July 31, 2013 at 11:49 am

Hi Angela,

I love your blog and your recipes!! I’ve been reading it for about a year and it is helping with my slow transition to vegan eating. I was wondering if you have any recommendations for a vegan caramel sauce? Salted or unsalted? Salted caramel hot chocolate was one of my favorite hot drinks from Starbucks at one point.

Angela (Oh She Glows) July 31, 2013 at 7:27 pm

Hey there, I do have a caramel recipe – you can find it in this PDF: http://ohsheglows.com/docs/Upside_Down_Cake.pdf the original post is here: http://ohsheglows.com/2010/10/10/project-food-blog-4-upside-down-makes-right-side-up/ enjoy!
