All I Really Need To Know, I Learned From A Food Blogger

by Angela (Oh She Glows) on December 15, 2009

If you live with or have a Blogger in the family, you have probably learned a lot about blogging. Probably a lot more than you ever wanted to know. My mom told me some of the things she has learned about blogging since I started Oh She Glows 1 year ago. I wrote this list up last night and boy did we have a barrel of laughs while doing so.

IMG_1946 1. A Speed Reading course is a good idea because you will be reading…a lot.

2. Your camera must be attached to your hip at all times. This may be extra difficult if you have a SLR camera, 2 lenses, a tripod, and an external flash. You must know it’s location at all times. Oh and you better have the batteries charged too!

3. Like your camera and all it’s parts, carry a notepad and pen at all times. You need to be able to jot down your ideas whenever they strike.

4. Be prepared to eat a lot of tepid or cold meals. Eating is no longer the main objective of the meal, but getting a good shot for the blog is.

5. If you are a guest at said meal, be prepared to try to act normal when the Food Blogger is clicking away. Try not to show your annoyance.

IMG_7872 6. If you should be near a Food Blogger, you always must be camera ready. You never know when your big moment is going to arrive. Food Bloggers like to surprise you at 6am in the morning in your robe. Before you know it, your picture is on the blog for the world to see.

7. If you are a picky eater, you probably shouldn’t be friends with a Food Blogger. You will be expected to try the good, bad, and the ugly and act like you enjoyed all of it.

8. Don’t pay attention to the glares and stares when eating out with a Food Blogger. Others probably don’t understand the appeal of photographing a dinner roll.

9. Beware of using a Food Blogger’s white plate or dish. They may ask for it at any time, and you better make it turn up clean and sparkling.

IMG_0571 10. Do you think preparing Thanksgiving dinner is stressful? Try preparing it, knowing that a Food Blogger is coming to your dinner table, and critiquing the food for thousands to see.

11. Don’t be surprised when you receive blank stares from your friends when you try to explain to them that your daughter is a Food Blogger….and a vegan. They often will look at you and say, ‘Who is Blog, a new boyfriend?’

12. You don’t want to be around a Food Blogger when a recipe fails and they are on a time crunch. Quickly leave the scene, mumbling about a dentist appointment. All will be well when you return.

13. Familiarize yourself with acronyms like LOL, DH, IMO, LMAO, TTYL, BTW…FML (still not sure what that one is), but try not use them when emailing your friends. They will email you back asking you if your computer sent them a virus.

14. You need to stay up to date in the Food Blogosphere. You must not only know the names of the relevant Food Blogs, but you must be able to match the Food Blogs with the respective Bloggers.

15. You catch yourself adopting the behaviours of a food blogger. You have a strange urge to photograph your own meals when you are away from the Food Blogger and think about how proud they would be of your masterpiece.

I need to send this to my boyfriend, he would appreciate “be prepared to try to act normal when the Food Blogger is clicking away. Try not to show your annoyance.”

Shelly December 15, 2009 at 12:01 pm

#11 reminds me of my mom. I told her that I was going over to my friend’s house to watch a show that TIVO has recorded for us. Mom said “How is Tivo doing these days?” I said “TIVO is a device used to record Television shows so that you can watch them later. As far as I know it is functioning properly. My friend’s boyfriend is also doing well.” I cracked up!

[email protected] December 15, 2009 at 12:05 pm

When I first started blogging and I lived at home, my Mother would ask me to snap a shot of her plate. lol She was intrigued by my blogging and photography.

Linzi (destination26.2) December 15, 2009 at 12:14 pm

Omigawsh I love it!! And sooo true (and i’m not even a food blogger!) But the more I blog the more food shows up in there and I have had to deal with the cold food, and weird looks while I am taking 15 pictures of one plate of food for the perfect blog pic. OMG!

Kristie Lynn December 15, 2009 at 12:18 pm

So are you going to clue her in to FML? ;) Love these!

Lindsay Perrone (goodiesgalore) December 15, 2009 at 12:18 pm

Best part about this whole post, (besides mom in robe with arms crossed in front of face)… “FML(still not sure what that one means.)”

Crack me right on up.

Nicole December 15, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Cute top Ang! And a very funny read as well.

This is so funny!

Cindy December 15, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Thank you OSH MOM
My husband could have matched your sentiments verbatim!

I think #8 is my favorite!

. Don’t pay attention to the glares and stares when eating out with a Food Blogger. Others probably don’t understand the appeal of photographing a dinner roll.

I didn’t set out to be foodie blogger…but I certainly finished my year of blogging as one!

Cindy December 15, 2009 at 12:29 pm

I mean OSG MOM…not OSH.

type-o’s are another blogger challenge. that and typing with cold hands!

Jewel December 15, 2009 at 12:33 pm

Katrina M December 15, 2009 at 12:55 pm

great post, thanks for sharing OSGMOM!!!

and totally unrelated, i had my first green monster this morning angela and i just HAD to tell you!!! :) it wasn’t too bad…. the banana taste was a little strong for me, but it wasn’t overly ripe either that could be part of it. but thanks so much, i’m excited to have one every morning and see if it makes me feel better!!!

Caroline December 15, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Love it! Definitely had me LOLing in the office. can be pretty amusing, btw. You forgot TWSS though most of us refrain from too many of those.

Bronwyn December 15, 2009 at 1:03 pm

Nice list. So true. :p

Angela – I LOVE your shirt in the first photo. Where’d you get it?

Beth @ DiningAndDishing December 15, 2009 at 1:04 pm

“Others probably don’t understand the appeal of photographing a dinner roll…” I love that – so true!!! Taking a pic of a beautiful plate of food is one thing but that is quite another!!

Julie @savvyeats December 15, 2009 at 1:05 pm

Dan has learned that when dinner is ready but I’m making a new recipe, he has an extra 5 minutes before he has to come to the table… because I’m busy taking pictures!

janetha December 15, 2009 at 1:06 pm

ahaha this was awesome!!! thanks OSGMOM!

Sarah December 15, 2009 at 1:09 pm

alex December 15, 2009 at 1:20 pm

Chelsea December 15, 2009 at 1:22 pm

This made my day. The FML comment was the absolute BEST!

Tracey @ TropicalHappiness December 15, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Toooooo funny! Love it! By the way, I’ve directed my parents to it is a great site for parents so that your kids don’t have to define things like FML for you!!!! ;) *heee heee!*

Anne P December 15, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Lol! This is hilarious, love it!

You forgot TWSS ;)

Jessie (Vegan-minded) December 15, 2009 at 1:55 pm

OMG, love it! So funny and true. OSG mom is great. :)

Erika December 15, 2009 at 1:55 pm

This is such a great post!!! I was laughing hysterically at my desk! And I do take a certain pride that my kids now make sure I take pictures of stuff before they touch it!

rhodeygirl December 15, 2009 at 2:01 pm

I LOVE this post. You have me cracking up.

Kelly December 15, 2009 at 2:05 pm

Lol…I definitely get WEIRD looks photographing in restaurants.

Stephanie December 15, 2009 at 2:34 pm

This is hillarious.

Emily (A Nutritionist Eats) December 15, 2009 at 2:36 pm

LOVE these!!!

Paige @ Running Around Normal December 15, 2009 at 2:51 pm

What an interesting perspective, OSGMOM! Wonderful post. Some of it cracked me up!! Especially the “your meal might be tepid or even cold” bahaha.
Glad you guys are enjoying each other’s company!

Laura Georgina December 15, 2009 at 3:15 pm

Love it, especially number 4! The man has slowly gotten used to it and avoids sitting down (blocking light! moving around! horror of horrors!) until I’m done taking pics, and good thing he doesn’t like his food super-hot. He finds it all pretty funny. The family, on the other hand, hasn’t yet experienced blogger mode… and I’m keeping my fingers crossed they don’t toss me out into the snow after I whip out the camera and bore them with macro this and ISO that.

What a sweet mommy you have! Enjoy your time with her.

Katie December 15, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Totally awesome post!

New SAHALE SNACKS giveaway, music, food + fitness –

Carolyn December 15, 2009 at 4:11 pm

Too funny! I definitely got some strange looks and questions when I was photographing my food at lunch today. :)

Leah December 15, 2009 at 4:16 pm

haha great post! I especially loved the bit about cold meals. Ive been doing a lot of reheating since I started my blog!!

Morgan @ Life After Bagels December 15, 2009 at 4:27 pm

I should send this post to my mom and mother in law so they can commiserate with OSGmom

Katie December 15, 2009 at 5:10 pm

What a perfectly timed post! I just spent an hour bookmarking food photography websites! I just started a blog a couple weeks ago and got a new camera yesterday, and want to learn everything. Good to know what my family is in for when I go home for the holidays!

Gelareh @ Orange Truffle December 15, 2009 at 5:35 pm

LOL. Loved the post. Very true :)

Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope December 15, 2009 at 6:12 pm

OMG, this cracked me up Angela. I think we can all relate to just about every single one of these! ;) Too cute!

kilax December 15, 2009 at 6:32 pm

Aw! I love this list. I am not a food blogger but I am definitely jotting down ideas all the time!

There should be a “match the blogger to their blog title name” game. Ha ha!

Sarah December 15, 2009 at 6:32 pm

Dying of laughter – love it!

Kristy December 15, 2009 at 7:38 pm

Thanks for the giggles! :-)

Susan December 15, 2009 at 7:45 pm

“4. Be prepared to eat a lot of tepid or cold meals. Eating is no longer the main objective of the meal, but getting a good shot for the blog is.”

I haven’t eaten a hot meal in almost a year!!! :P

And my mother texts almost everyday about whatever notable food she had. She secretly wants to be a food blogger too ;)

Karla December 15, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Haha #4 definitely happened to me tonight! This is hilarious!

Lisa (bakebikeblog) December 15, 2009 at 8:13 pm

haha that is too funny! I am only new to food blogging – but have been taking pics of mu kitchen creations for years now. I think my family has stopped being surprised – I don’t think they quite get it – but will happily relight candles on birthday cakes if I didn’t quite get the perfect shot hehe

Runtothefinish December 15, 2009 at 8:48 pm

Oh my that was a fantastic and hilariouusly true assesment by osgmom

Lesley Lifting Life December 15, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Haha, this is spot on … I loved it! ; )

Jolene December 15, 2009 at 11:30 pm

LOL I love these!! I also love how my friends and family (including my inlaws) don’t even flinch anymore when I grab my camera and start shooting dinner!

Julia December 16, 2009 at 1:32 am

Angela! I just received my order of Globars in the mail, and even though it is almost midnight here and I’m full from a dinner out, I HAD to try one! I tried the peanut butter & chocolate and I must say…you are a genius! It is chewy, soft, full of flavor…congrats on an amazing job! Your bars are so worth the money.

Trail December 16, 2009 at 1:52 am

This made me LOL as I searched the house high and low for our camera to snap off pics of my dinner tonight! Turned out that hubby had it at guy’s night out. I’m quickly turning into a food blogger!

Carissa December 16, 2009 at 2:40 am

LOL… so true! It IS all about the picture (cold food or not), and I share your enthusiasm for photographing dinner rolls. It’s the blogger in me! The friends and fam don’t understand, but they learn to accept that the camera does come out while shopping at the farmer’s market, in Whole Foods, or at restaurants. :)

Tania @ Moment Anew December 16, 2009 at 4:41 am

LOL!!! Great post!! My guests scurry like squirrels when I whip out the camera!

Shannon December 16, 2009 at 7:51 am

Taking time to get a good picture has actually saved my husband some burned tongue incidents! He always wants to dig right in and then he burns himself! But my picture-taking forces him to wait!

Annie D. December 16, 2009 at 11:07 am

ISN’T THIS THE TRUTH?! My family dreads my presence at meals… hehehe :o)

Laura [Real Meal Steal] December 16, 2009 at 11:37 am

Too funny! Thanks for posting this! My Dad had dinner at our place last night and sat with his hands neatly in his lap when I was snapping photos. I finally realized what he was doing and said, “Oh, YOU’RE not in the picture, Dad! It’s all about the food.”

Lindsey (EatReadRun) December 16, 2009 at 12:31 pm

Hysterical! I love it. My hubby has recently tried turning the food blogger thing on me and randomly grabs my camera while I’m baking holiday treats and starts going on and on about how great this will look on “his blog.” He soo wants a blog – I know it.

Pure2Raw - Twins December 16, 2009 at 3:01 pm

This is great! Your mom is so cute! She is right on target!!!

liane December 16, 2009 at 3:51 pm

Thank you for the laughs! I can imagine the fun you two had putting the list together :)

Meagan December 16, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Hahahaha this is hilarious! I printed it out and had my mom dieing of laughter. :-D

Diana (Soap & Chocolate) December 17, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Angela, this is hysterical. I can see where you get your sense of humor!

And yeah, I’ve all but given up on eating my food while it’s still hot.

mmclaughlin December 17, 2009 at 10:49 pm

I didn’t read through all of the comments, but I’m sure I’m not the only one – I love your top in the first picture!! And this post definitely brought a smile to my face tonight :)

Michal December 17, 2009 at 11:31 pm

Haha I love this post its too funny :) and right too. I showed it to my mom and she said “mmmmhmm… yep. right on the nose.”

Katy @ These Beautiful Feet December 18, 2009 at 1:43 am

I’m so glad you vegan bloggers exist, I’ve learned everything from you guys! And this is def one of my favourite food blogs:)
I am way too lazy to blog, I toss up a couple funny pics on my FB page every few days and that’s all I can manage [haha]
