Making Time For Sit Down Meals

by Angela (Oh She Glows) on October 14, 2009

**Please note: Blue Host is currently ‘jailing’ my website because it is using up too much CPU usage.  This is why my site is slow. I am working on looking for a new host.**

The past few days I have been paying careful attention to the food that I am eating and in what amounts. Things have been so busy that I noticed that I wasn’t getting enough fuel to support my long hours in the bakery. I would often grab something quick for lunch and be back at it 5 minutes later. Well, we all know that this isn’t healthy, so I decided this week to start re-claiming the lunch (and dinner) hour!

At my old job I was used to never taking lunch breaks because my boss often made us work through them. I realized that I picked up this habit back in university when I would eat while studying instead of taking a proper mental and physical break from it all.

My food lately has been grab and go. Quick, easy, and nutritious items that either don’t require preparation or require minimal heating.

Today’s lunch was a can of Health Valley’s Organic Black Bean Soup:

Since this is a no salt added soup it is very bland.

I add ample seasonings and it’s not too bad once I do that!

Mmm…It warmed me up so much.

It is freezing in our house! We keep the thermostat at 67F to save some energy.

A Chi Glo Bar:

And a banana eaten in the car while dropping off my shipment.

It’s definitely FALL!

Oh we will have fun raking this year! lol

Crunch, crunch, crunch.

I always eat lunch while reading a book, working, reading blogs or watching TV. As long as I am not working, it is a great mental break. I eat breakfast while working so I NEED the mental lunch break that the meal provides.. Somehow, though, I feel it would be even better if I just stepped away from it all and simply ate.

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is October 14, 2009 at 2:48 pm

Good for you girl! Take some time for yourself! :)

Vanessa (Last Night's Leftovers) October 14, 2009 at 2:57 pm

I often eat breakfast in the car, lunch while studying, and dinner at my incredible cluttered kitchen table. It is definitely something I’ve been working on fixing!

Good for you for taking some time for yourself. You need it to continue being fabulous ;)

caitlin October 14, 2009 at 3:05 pm

you know, i eat every meal in front of my computer, writing or blogging or answering emails. i cant decide if its a “bad” thing — i don’t think it is. But if i was so busy i was missing meals, that would be rough!

Jessie (Vegan-minded) October 14, 2009 at 3:09 pm

As much as I try to make time for sit down meals, I usually just eat in front of my computer. I guess that’s the bad part about not having a proper office and keeping my laptop on the dining room table ;)

Jess October 14, 2009 at 3:13 pm

I don’t have a problem usually for dinner – I’m at work and just can’t wait to get away from my desk! – but lunch & breakfast are almost always on the fly. Heck, breakfast sometimes doesn’t happen until noon. I know it’s not good, but it’s a hard habit to break. :)

Hey there,
Have you tried Dreamhost? They were recommended to me by someone who has a fair amount of traffic…

I do occasionally eat at my work desk but one thing I’ve found since moving home recently and having no TV and just getting on our feet: We spend more time just sitting at the table together. Our dinners can morph into 1-2 hours now – something I’d like to keep up when possible :)

Krista October 14, 2009 at 3:19 pm

NOW you mention the chocolate, after I order the regular tub. ;) Thanks for the info though, that’s an amazing discount!

Hard to believe you have frost, it is 27C here today in the south.

Angela (Oh She Glows) October 14, 2009 at 7:17 pm

Sorry hun- the chocolate wasn’t available until she emailed me this afternoon. I asked her about it prior but it wasn’t in stock yet! Can you change your order?

Until my pregnancy, I often ate breakfast and lunch at my desk. I did not realize it at the time but trying to eat a meal while answering e-mails, auditing charts, building spreadsheets and placing phone calls was distracting and stressing. It is no suprise that I felt hungry all the time – I was eating too fast to let my body know it was full.

Now I take 45 minutes for lunch and eat with my co-workers in our break room. The conversation is good for my mind – reducing the stress of the day. And the routine is good for my body as it forces me to eat slower. I also take a 10 minute snack break at around 3:00 p.m. – which helps me make the final push to work day’s end.

I think that’s a great idea. Everybody needs some time to relax and have a decent meal. :)

Sometimes I have a hard time making time for meals, especially when I’m out on a photoshoot. Sometimes I don’t eat till much later which isn’t a good idea, I know. :/

Krista October 14, 2009 at 3:34 pm

I put the kids to work raking leaves on Monday! Hehe!!!

With all the extra sporting activities my kids do, it can certainly be a struggle to get something healthy into all of us. I try to make sure I have healthy home cooked sauces and broths in the freezer for quick meals at all times. The crock pot is super handy, too!

christie @ honoring health October 14, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Sometimes, I truly think you are reading my mind. Your posts seem to line up with exactly what I am going through. I have been working with my RD and my therapist on this “sticking” point. I have done all of the work necessary to recover from binge eating and compulsive overeating but this one point is so hard for me. I know that I need to make time just for eating but I am so resistant to just doing it. Thanks for reminding me that we all struggle with this!

Jil October 14, 2009 at 3:50 pm

Great to hear that you’re taking a lunch (and dinner) break! Not only do you need it, but you deserve it.

Nikki T October 14, 2009 at 3:50 pm

I think it’s a great idea to close Glo Bakery for lunch from 12-1245pm! Everyone needs a few minutes of ‘chill time’- especially a person as busy as you!!
I think a break refreshes your mind and helps the afternoon work load run smoother!
Have a great day :)

Allison October 14, 2009 at 4:03 pm

If I’m by myself, I almost can’t eat unless I’m also reading a magazine, watching TV, or doing stuff on the computer. Though I usually don’t work while eating; I hide those windows and read blogs or pull up something on Hulu. But I definitely get streaks every now and then where I just keep going and going and suddenly realize I’m STARVING and should’ve eaten an hour ago! Maybe I’ll schedule little pop-up alarms in my computer to remind to eat at regular times.

Mellissa October 14, 2009 at 4:04 pm

I am so bad at not stopping to eat, I actually keep snacks in my car!

Jenna October 14, 2009 at 4:06 pm

I love fall so much! your soup and gorgeous fall leaves look so cozy!

SnowKat October 14, 2009 at 4:20 pm

When I saw you’d eaten a Chi bar for lunch I got all excited and checked the GloBakery site thinking they’re back… What a tease! ;P

angieinatlanta October 14, 2009 at 4:23 pm

Ah, I am SO bad about this! I always work through lunch! Sometimes, I even forget what I had, which is a definite sign to me that I need to slow it down!

Courtney October 14, 2009 at 4:32 pm

I think it is a good idea for you to schedule in is easy to get caught up in the go, go, go, but you need fuel to keep it going!
I recently rearranged my sitting room/dining area and took the tv out of the eating area and moved the table. Now on nights my hubs and I are actually home at the same time for dinner we eat together, at the table, instead of in front of the tv or downstairs on the recliners. So much nicer, and makes for good conversation!

Chloe (Naturally Frugal) October 14, 2009 at 4:48 pm

I always eat breakfast and lunch sitting down and away from my desk at work, and have been trying to have more family dinners with the boyfriend. It’s nice to sit down together as a couple and chat about our day, as well as slow down our meals.

We haven’t turned the heat on yet and finally the bf declared an end to it all. It’s been in the 40’s here, so I guess he’s kinda right but I hate to turn it on already!

Jenny October 14, 2009 at 4:56 pm

I’ve tried that soup once and was not a fan at all — It literally tasted like veggies in dishwater. Unfortunately, all other soups have an insane amount of sodium. Why is there no happy medium?! le sigh.

Angela (Oh She Glows) October 14, 2009 at 7:20 pm

LMAO @ veggies in dishwater.
oh man that is funny. I could see that for sure. It is BLAND as hell.
I wish there was a happy medium too! The veggie flavour is my fav of all of those ones.

Whitney @ Lettuce Love October 14, 2009 at 4:58 pm

I always sit and have dinner every night but bfast and lunch are always on the go. I while usually eat at my desk for bfast and lunch while I am working.

Susan October 14, 2009 at 5:19 pm

I really like how that soup is so bland! Gives you lots of wiggle room to spice it up :)

I don’t get lunch breaks at my job. Often times, I have back-to-back assignments from 9 in the morning to 5 in the evening. I’ve gotten pretty good at packing foods I can eat in the car (I try to at least park somewhere to eat it). But I can’t stand having to eat a snack while walking! Actually, it’s one of the things that frustrates me the most about my job…

Heather October 14, 2009 at 5:21 pm

OMG thank you for the discount!!! I have been out for a few weeks, and I really need some more :-) Sometimes I come home completely starving and start to just grab things and eat while thinking of what to eat as a meal, but then it’s too late for a meal and I’ve already eaten plenty!

maria October 14, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Happy to hear you are taking time for yourself. That is healthy to do and good! :) Keep it up!

Jolene ( October 14, 2009 at 7:22 pm

I have always tried to make a point of eating my meals sitting down, and while doing nothing else. Sometimes I eat in front of the TV though … who am I kidding, I do it a lot!

Jamie October 14, 2009 at 7:25 pm

We always say we’re going to sit down at the table for dinner without the TV on, but then end up on the couch watching some show. I’m pretty good about eating breakfast and lunch without distractions.

Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries October 14, 2009 at 7:41 pm

Your fall picks are gorgeous!

Dani October 14, 2009 at 7:48 pm

I usually work through my lunch break also, eating at my desk typing away ;) Good for you taking some time for yourself! And those are beautiful fall pictures!!

Erin October 14, 2009 at 7:48 pm

I took lunch all the time during the summer, but now that we’re back to our academic year schedule, I hardly EVER do! I miss my afternoon walk! I’m taking it back asap!

Sana October 14, 2009 at 7:54 pm

I eat my meals at the stoplight. Yes, I am soo happy when the light is red and I shove food in my mouth!

Jenn Eats Nutritiously Now October 14, 2009 at 8:12 pm

Good for you! You deserve time for yourself to mentally rest!!

Tay October 14, 2009 at 10:45 pm

Our house gets down into the 50’s..we only turn on the heater if absolutely necessary! haha. I’ve been trying to be better about sitting down and eating at the table vs eating in front of the TV/computer. It really helps!

bobbi October 15, 2009 at 1:14 am

ANG! I love all the fall photos and your GLOBARS!!! I really need those right now for my detox:) I love making time for sit down dinners.

Cynthia (It All Changes) October 15, 2009 at 7:41 pm

Lunch lately has been grab and go because things get busy this time of the year at work. Dinner is crazy so we try to set some crockpot meals most days so that we can have something warm and homecooked instead of packaged or takeaway.

Good for you for planning to take a break. You deserve it!

AGS October 15, 2009 at 10:40 pm

What is lunch? (Just kidding!) I must be a little strange. I love being so busy I barely have a spare minute. I schedule two “mini meals” for the day that I keep at my desk/in a mini fridge that I can eat quickly and give me energy.

Every now and then, though, I take an “executive lunch” with a colleague or my husband. Dinner is relaxing time, and never involves anything other than conversation and food.
