Eric & Ange Do Fresh Restaurant

by Angela (Oh She Glows) on August 30, 2009

Fresh restaurant was everything I hoped it would be and more!! We ended up going to the Crawford location for ‘lupper’ around 4:30pm. :)

The inside was just as I pictured it would be: Casual, green, and minimalist.

Unfortunately, it was freezing and really windy so we didn’t sit out on the patio. Next time!! These brave souls almost blew away!

We sat down to the menu and suddenly every suggestion that I read on the blog yesterday left my mind. I drew a blank! I guess it was the excitement of it all. ;)

I studied the menu (front and back!) and Eric spoke but I didn’t hear any words. I was so serious about my menu pick! He was a good sport though.

I was going to create my own juice, but I figured, hey I do that every day, why not leave it to the pros today.

So I decided on something I have never had before- a hot immune elixir!

I decided on the hot ‘Flu Fighter’ since I was quite cold and had a chill. It was very hot and paired excellently with my dish. I seriously think this new hot drink idea is going to be my go-to GM in the winter time! I will have to try this as a smoothie and not a juice since I don’t have a juicer.

It looks like Eric is drinking it! But he’s sipping his mango juice. ;)

Oh. Dear. Me. was this ever tasty!!! Celery, kale, carrot, ginger, lemon, cayenne, Echinacea. WOW. I am seriously going to start making these asap! I got mine without garlic though since my tummy has a hard time digesting it.

Eric got fresh mango juice:

It was delicious too!

Then came the mains. I recalled everyone saying Fresh’s bowls are really good, so I decided to get one of those. I am so glad that I got the ‘baby’ size because it was tons of food and the perfect size.

I opted for the ‘Energy’ bowl :D

Ingredients: Marinated tofu cubes, coconut curry sauce (divine!!!!), chick pea & veggie stew, cukes, tomato, red onion, sunflower sprouts, and tahini sauce.

It was sooooooo mouth-watering delicious!! The coconut curry sauce was maybe the best sauce I’ve ever had. It wasn’t overpowering in any way (something that curry can often be for me).

Here I was pretty much in seventh heaven bliss.

A peek inside my dish:

There was a thick layer of curry coconut rice on the bottom. The tofu was also outstanding.

Eric went for the Grilled Vegetable and Pesto Burrito:

Untitled IMG_5711

Have you ever seen a wrap look as delicious as this? This wrap did not disappoint. Eric and I talked about how many new foods he eats since I came along. lol. It’s crazy to think about it because when we started dating in high school he wouldn’t even eat any veggies- no joke! Now he is happily eating at vegetarian restaurants.

He absolutely loved his wrap. The pesto was out of this world delicious.

And then I spotted the dessert menu…

We decided to split the carrot cake and also try a double chocolate cookie.

The cake was phenomenal. It was VERY dense though and I suspect very high in oil. It was definitely a splurge!

We didn’t really care for the cookie though. It was a bit dry. Eric still ate it though! hehe.

We left most of the icing on the plate because there was just way too much. I think we had about 1/4 of the icing. It was pretty good, but I really preferred the cake itself.

All and all, our experience at Fresh was definitely A+. It felt so good to leave a restaurant and feel GOOD about everything we ate. Everything tasted amazing, the service was fast and pleasant, and it was a great place to people watch.

On the way home, Eric got me this anniversary gift…

What a fabulous day. :)

Happy girl.

Not sure what we are up to tonight, but I should get going! NIGHT! :)

Hey dear! You ARE absolutely glowing in that photo. You look beautiful!

The two things that stood out to me from your eats- 1. Coconut Curry (love coconut and curry, so together, what a team) 2. Carrot Cake (which is one of my all time favorite indulgences). It sounds like you had a fabulous time.

Happy anniversary!!

Nicole August 30, 2009 at 9:31 pm

Fresh sounds AWESOME!! I wish I could get there sometime!

Brandi C August 30, 2009 at 9:37 pm

SO JEALOUS! I need a FRESH in my area bc I would definitely eat there everytime we go out to CELEBRATE until I tried EVERYTHING on the menu =]
Glad you had a lovely time!

Whitney August 30, 2009 at 9:39 pm

What a great dinner experience! You are glowing, but then, when don’t you? ;)

Marissa August 30, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Glad you all have been enjoying your anniversary festivities! It’s funny that you say your hubby wouldn’t eat veggies before he met you because my husband was the same way. I’ve introduced him to many vegetables that he didn’t even know of before we met. And, ironically, he commented at dinner tonight how happy he is with his new diet. Since we were married last year, he has lost about 25lbs. He is in much better health now all around!

VeggieGirl August 30, 2009 at 9:39 pm

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, DEAR ANGELA!! A fabulous day, indeed.

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) August 30, 2009 at 9:39 pm

I would have licked that extra frosting off your plate. Whoops, I’m dairy free and the cream CHEESE frosting probably would kill my tummy but it perhaps may have been worth it. That’s like love on a plate for me. Foodgasmic.

Next, you look absolutely GLOWING and gorg in that last pic of yourself. Radiant beauty, you.

Question…do you ever feel weird about taking pics of food in restaurants? Since I started getting into my food blog, I really havent gone out much, and I am not a self conscious person about so many things….but I think food-pic-taking inside a restaurant would do it for me. I see all you girls with these great food from restaurant shots and I guess you must just be like what the hell, who cares…but I honestly would feel a little weird. How did you get over this? Or did you never care that people saw you taking really close up shots of food?

Angela (Oh She Glows) August 30, 2009 at 10:23 pm

The icing is dairy free! :)

I do feel strange taking pictures…I try to do it very discreetly with no flash and just 1 quick shot. To be honest when you don’t use a flash no one barely notices at all. :)

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) August 31, 2009 at 10:16 am

OMG dairy free cream cheese icing. There is a God.

And thanks for explaining your stealth snapshot taking trick. One pic, no flash. Ok…possibly do-able :)

Danielle August 30, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Happy Anniversary you two! And may I add that you are both glowing in your OSG photos :)

Fresh sounds like such a fantastic place. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you get to go again… very soon (wink, wink)

Molly August 30, 2009 at 9:45 pm

happy anniversary! eric is such a good sport for supporting your healthy lifestyle. i would love to see a guest post by him sometime on how eating mostly vegetarian has affected him (does he do it out of convenience or does he really enjoy it? has he noticed health benefits? etc.).

have a good night!

Lindsey (Mrs. LC) August 30, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Happy Anniversary to you and Eric, sweet Ange. :) If I lived in Canada I’d totally take you up on a blogger meet up date. ;)

Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) August 30, 2009 at 9:58 pm

Shannon, The Healthy Beach Bum August 30, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Cait (Cait's Plate) August 30, 2009 at 10:14 pm

You really ARE glowing! You look so beautiful! I’m glad you guys had such a fun anniversary! No waiters yelling at you for being Vegan is a good start! Haha! :)

Food looks delicious though, I’m jealous and really want a Fresh by me!!

Lauren August 30, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Hi Angela! I’ve just started reading your blog and would love to order your treats when they’re available in the US! Ok, I know everyone has been saying how glowing you are, but seriously, your skin is gorgeous! I know a large part of it is your diet and lifestyle, but do you have any skincare or product tips? Or makeup tips? I would love to hear them! :)

Angela (Oh She Glows) August 30, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Thank you sweetie! I’ve been using a new all natural face wash that really makes my skin glow. I will be reviewing it soon!

'Dee August 30, 2009 at 10:20 pm

“Fresh” looks amazing! Although I am surprised you didn’t pick the “Warrior” bowl – LOL!

Happy Anniversary to you and Eric, Ange. Congratulations!

Wow – are you ever beautiful! I just love your hair too! That food looks so delicious and healthy … perfect!

WholeBodyLove August 31, 2009 at 12:09 am

Happy anniversary! That carrot cake looked awesome, oil aside. Hmmmm…what about a Glo Bakery version? If anyone can healthify it, it’s you.

Audrey August 31, 2009 at 12:14 am

I know everyone is saying it, but you are beyond gorgeous! Fresh looks amazing. Please say that it exists in the US! Happy, happy anniversary to a GLOWING couple. :D

muffy August 31, 2009 at 12:25 am

PS Can I have your frosting? It is so my fave food lol!

Megan August 31, 2009 at 1:38 am

Looks fabulous! Happy Anniversary!

Tracie @hollafoodzone August 31, 2009 at 1:48 am

Fresh looks like a great restaurant – finding a place like that is like a little gift to yourself! I have to laugh about all of your posts that include kale – it’s a sure giveaway of northern climes!

Milca August 31, 2009 at 2:03 am

Looked so good!! Your hair looks really nice. I love the messy curls!!

Peabody August 31, 2009 at 3:10 am

Men will eat just about anything sometimes, especially cookies. I had some really stale ones I was about to throw into compost and my husband was like, don’t throw those out. He ate them. So odd. Personally, I like a fresh cookie.

Steph August 31, 2009 at 6:05 am

hey ange! i would love to attend a meet-up at fresh. i sent you an email, but it bounced back- not sure what is wrong. let me know the details if you end up planning something!

Meghan August 31, 2009 at 6:09 am

okay, you are beautiful and are my role model. :-) I discovered your blog in the very beginning- you have come so far! Congrats!

sonia August 31, 2009 at 6:36 am

Fresh sounds like a great place to dine…the cake looks so yummy!

Angi August 31, 2009 at 6:40 am

Happy anniversary!
I keep chuckling over your tweet re: anniversary gifts. This year is appliances for me…I shudder to think what I’ll get!

I am going to look into going to Fresh next time I am in TO!

Tammy (Defining Wellness) August 31, 2009 at 7:36 am

Fresh looks like a great restaurant! Happy anniversary!

Courtney's Concoctions August 31, 2009 at 7:38 am

Fresh is my favorite restaurant! Everytime I go back to Toronto I make sure to visit. The salads are divine too – and they have a soup, salad and cornbread combo which is great for the colder fall and winter days. And of course sweet potato fries with miso gravy!

Lizzie August 31, 2009 at 8:33 am

Yes – I’m jealous!!! I love those kind of restaurants. Though there is a vegan/raw cafe opening nearby this week, so you might have inspired me to check it out. Glad that you had a nice anniversary. It’s so funny. My husband eats more veggies now too (he said that his mother boiled all veggies to the extreme when he was growing up and that really turned him off. It’s funny. Even now when she gets beans at a restaurant and their cooked lightly, she complains they’re too crunchy! :) Anyway because of him I eat a lot of other things too – like mussels . . would never have touched them otherwise but now I love them. So it can work both ways :)

Susan August 31, 2009 at 8:44 am

Okay, hot juice has never occured to me, but that sounds amazing!! I have a really hard time digesting raw vegetables, so maybe that will ease my tummy troubles :) Those are impressive serving sizes too. I’d probably have to go back until I tried everything on the menu :P

Shannon (The Daily Balance) August 31, 2009 at 8:50 am

The Mister and I are going to Toronto this coming weekend and ‘fresh’ is on our list of places to go! I’m even more excited after reading this post! ;)

skinnyrunner August 31, 2009 at 8:55 am

looks like some good eating and you look so cute! definitely glowing!

Jessica August 31, 2009 at 9:20 am

Hey, I’m a high school runner and I like to search other blogs by people who run as well (yes a high schooler looking at blogs!). I also live in Ontario. I’ve been following your blog for about a month because you have amazing philosophies and creative ideas. You are also so beautiful! I’m jealous of your glowing skin which really made me start focussing on healthy foods. I was already part way there but not to the point where I was putting spinach in my smoothies! After a couple weeks of ice cream everyday I broke out and I recently started having a green monster everyday and I’ve already noticed a difference in my skin! Thanks for the amazing blog!

PS: Keep up the great running! And sorry for the long post :P.

Kristin August 31, 2009 at 9:21 am

Your anniversary dinner looks delicious!!!
I *may* be moving to the Toronto area in January and I knooowwww I will be frequenting if I do!!

Maria August 31, 2009 at 10:25 am

So glad you guys had a yummy, fresh meal. ;)

I’d love to do a Fresh meetup (work and live in downtown TO) – tried emailing you and got a “550 No Such User Here (state 14)” bounceback, though. Maybe something’s up with your server?

Keep me in the loop. :)

Paige @ Running Around Normal August 31, 2009 at 10:39 am

That place sounds awesome! I’ve never been, after this review, would love to! You and Eric looked very nice on your anniversary lupper :) Hope today’s just as fab! Happy anniversary!

Alex August 31, 2009 at 10:52 am

Glad you had such a great experience at Fresh! It’s definitely where I like to go for homestyle eats when I don’t feel like cooking. I’ve never tried their carrot cake but I think I should now! Carrot cake is my ALL-TIME FAVOURITE DESSERT! My use of capitals should express how much I love it. It is a splurge though, so I usually reserve it for my bday or other very special occasions.

And I’d definitely be down for a blog meet-up! I’ll send you an email soon :)

brandi August 31, 2009 at 11:11 am

Ditto to the bounced email re. meet-up. I’m a Toronto-based long-time reader and would love to partake in a Buddah Bowl with some like-minded blog readers. Because Buddah Bowls are delicious and blog readers are (clearly) awesome. Email me whenever you are making plans for a meet-up!

And Happy Anniversary!

Laura @ Backstage Pass to Health & Happiness August 31, 2009 at 12:09 pm

I love the Anniversary ‘do! Pretty hair :-)

The juice looks really good – and to be served hot – what a great way to chase a chill away. Wish we had something like ‘Fresh’ in Milwaukee.

~Jessica~ August 31, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Wow! That’s the first menu I have EVER seen where I could actually get something to eat (vegan/coeliac/allergic to soy, garlic and onion)…I would definitely have ordered the ‘simple’ bowl with brown rice, and those juices! Well, let’s just say I’m greener than your GMs right now.

Have a lovely Monday!

Jess (Fit Chick in the City) August 31, 2009 at 2:22 pm

Liz August 31, 2009 at 7:28 pm

Fresh looks like an amazing restaurant! I love places like that that make you feel good about what you eat, instead of weighed down and gross. It looks like you picked the right dish for sure!
Have a wonderful anniversary day and night!
