She’s Baaaack

by Angela (Oh She Glows) on March 3, 2009

Good afternoon!!

That’s right….she’s baaaaack!! :D

I had my first workout today in exactly 7 weeks!!! I swear the endorphins are pumping through my veins. lol. My body doesn’t quite know what to do with itself!

I signed up for 2 weeks at a local gym about 10 mins. away with the intent on using the elliptical machine until I am fully healed and ready for impact exercises.

I rocked my I Eat Real Food tee while working out:

Of course my visit to the gym was not without drama. I came in with a big smile on my face and said, “I’d like to sign up for a 2 week membership please” To which the girl at the counter said “We don’t sell those I don’t think…” And I showed her on the website where they sell 2 week trials. She said “Oh you have to do this online” And me being the practical person that I am, I said, “Oh do you think we could fill it out together?” All the form wanted was name, address, and Credit card info- NOT much. Seeing as I was already there, I didn’t see a problem!

So, she has to go and get her manager. This was the same lady that Eric and I met when we were looking at this gym a while ago (before the running beast purchase) and Eric said she rubbed him the wrong way. She comes out and immediately says, “Why do you only want a 2 week membership?” (like it was her business!). I told her it was because of an injury. She said, “Well we can’t sell you the 2 week membership here, you can’t use our computers…it is a CORPORATE offer, not from our specific club.

I was flabbergasted and I had to collect myself to make sure I was hearing her right. I said, “Are you saying that I can’t even fill out the form while I am here, you are going to make me go home to fill it out?” And she said yes, and repeated that it was a corporate offer.

I said, “I’m sorry but that just doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.”

She said I could still workout while I was there, but I was planning on going home to get my gear anyways, so I just turned around and walked out. I was miffed!!! I went home, filled out the damn form, and then went back later. I really didn’t want to go back to this gym, so I opted for the all women’s club that is attached to it. They were much friendlier there!!

Has anyone else ever had a gym horror story?

This other club where Eric and I used to go wouldn’t let us cancel our membership unless we made an appointment with someone, and then they tried to talk us out of it! I hate that with a passion!

The Workout

Cardio: Elliptical (I watched Oprah while I worked out! It was sad, sad, sad…)

Duration: 35 mins. on incline 12, resistance 10

Feel the burn: 340 kcals

Max heart rate: 176 bpm (90% of max)

Avg Heart rate: 163 (84% of max)

Let me just say this: It felt so damn good to be sweating again!!!

The elliptical was SO gentle…my injury didn’t hurt one tiny bit. I am so relieved I can do something now! :D

Today’s Crap Free Eats (Crap Free Week: Day 11!!):

As you know I need to fit back into my wedding dress for the photoshoot in less than 2 weeks time. I am going to talk a bit about the changes I have made to my diet and some of the thought processes behind the choices.

When you see ‘Wedding Dress Plan’ in bold, I will tell you the rationale for my choice.

My plan is to burn about 250-300 calories per day with the elliptical and shave off about the same through small cutbacks to my diet. I am not counting calories with respect to what I eat. I want to show others that it is possible to make healthy adjustments to your diet without having to count calories!

This will hopefully result in a 2-3 pound weight loss and have my dress fitting perfect again!

Breakfast: Detoxifying Green Monster

The loot:

  • 6 cups of organic kale
  • 1 cup Original Almond Breeze
  • 1 Tbsp flax
  • 1 medium organic carrot
  • 3 ice cubes

Wedding dress plan: I skipped the fruit as I didn’t need the extra sugars this morning. Breakfast was late and I knew lunch was only 1.5 hours away. I bulked it up with 6 cups of kale and a carrot. Volume eating is the way to go when you don’t want to feel deprived.

The key to the all veggie smoothie is LOTS of liquids (I should have added more) and blending it for several minutes, to make it smooth. I forgot to take an after pic, but I think you get the just of it! ;)

I worked long and hard on my Glo Bakery incorporation again today. In fact, it took up most of the day. Unfortunately, I still had much more work to do because the name was rejected again! I had to research 5 company names (that were similar to Glo Bakery, like Glo Enterprises Ltd) on the internet and 411 system and find out what types of companies they are. Then, after all of that I had to resubmit! Fingers crossed it gets the go ahead!

Then I had a nice chat with my mom about it and we talked about ideas for it. :) It was fun. She gave me a wonderful idea today- I should get a booth at the local farmers market this summer to sell my goodies!!! I am so going to do this. It would be fabulous!

Leftover Vegetable Kale Soup (with tons of lentils). I sprinkled it with paprika…it was lovely!

Wedding dress plan: I was going to mix in 1/4 cup of Solgourt, but I figure this was an easy cut back and wouldn’t leave me feeling like I was missing much. Instead of sprinkled on some paprika.

Before the gym snack:

An organic gala apple

Post gym snack:

2 large organic carrots with 3-4 Tbsp homemade hummus. I also had a handful of Mary’s Organic Crackers.

Wedding Dress plan: I wanted to slather these with my homemade Almond butter, but to save calories I opted for hummus.

Ok, I am off to pick up E-Dawg (nickname!) from the GO train. We have to stop at Tip Top tailors to have his measurments taken for the suit they are renting him. Adios amigos!!! I’m going to ride my endorphin high all night! haha

See you tonight for the blog announcement! :D

“At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person.
Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”

You all have rekindled my flame many times when I was feeling down about my injury- so thank you all!

YAY!!! SOOOO glad you were able to break a sweat and burn off some energy today!!! I know how relieved and excited you are!

FYI – I know this is just temporary for you, but I really like the “Wedding Dress Plan” tips! It’s so helpful for someone like me who’s still in the “learning how to lose” phase. (possibly for a future wedding dress? hahaha just kidding!)

I guess now is a time to do my comment for the 30 day shred give away… I think you know how much your blog has helped me, but I will list a few more reasons:
– OhSheGlows was the first “real” blog I ever started reading
– I was immediately connected to your story and way of thinking
– You constantly remind me that I am capable of anything that I put my whole mind, body and spirit into
– Your posts always make me think about myself in a more postive, proactive, loving manner

– OK, this is getting to be a bit much, you get the gist!

Thanks, Angela!

Dang! Incline 12, Resistance 10! That’s amazing after not working out for 7 weeks! Go girl!

Yes! A workout — you must be so very happy. I’m happy for you. I remember how rough it was for me when I was injured awhile back.

A commentson how this blog has helped me.

Calorie counting — finally gone. I always plan out my meals for the week (saves time and makes sure I’m eating balanced meals). But I have always kind of been thinking “how many calories is this or that?” This has gone on for the last several years — a mental tallying in my head.

So, I finally decided I should just *trust* myself. I keep on planning meals, but don’t worry about calories — it almost doesn’t enter my head anymore. Love that — thanks for being the example and encouragement I needed to break this habit. AND in the month I’ve stopped keeping a mental tally of calories. . . not a single change in my weight. Guess I could have trusted myself a long time ago!!

I know this is long. . . but I was wondering if you could speak to stress and sleep at some point. I’m so stressed (I love what I do, but it’s still stressful) that I’ve been having trouble sleeping. Have you dealt with this? If so, how did you deal with it? The main problem is that when I’m not well rested I tend to have to drink coffee/eat more to keep energy levels up.

I have had very similar gym story. I belong to a large, corporate gym that has a lot of chains. My boyfriend was interested in joining and we went to talk to the person and I asked about the free 2-week trial membership. It was the same thing, the guy kept saying that they didn’t offer those and when I said that you could print it off their website, he said that I had to go home and do it!

Great to see you back from the injury Angela! That is brutal about the gym membership!! I was glad to read you didn’t go back :) I am really liking your green monster

haya March 3, 2009 at 8:31 pm

that’s a super idea! i’ve been thinking about getting a farmer’s market booth, but my market is on thursdays and i can’t miss a day of work every week for the summer/fall. i would really like to someday though!

Love the shirt!!!

So glad you were able to sweat some :)

Leah March 4, 2009 at 2:06 am

I’m so glad that you were able to get to the gym! What a horror story though. How rude. I remember a specific gym that we used to go to (remember EW?) and they wanted a meeting to find out why I wanted to cancel as well!…… um… i’m moving to Australia I said!! LOL!

Love the t-shirt too! :)

Ahh here is the full story. I’m glad it felt so good (the workout). I hate it when people act all hautain like that – I must admit if they do it too much I end up crying. Haha, so yeah, I hate it too. I think I’m quite lucky with this current gym – I did join one gym once and it was for a year, and I didn’t go ONCE. It wasn’t cheap either. Ahh well – good on ya for going somehwere else.

That gym treatment is shocking. I am proud that you told them it didn’t make sense–I have a hard time with even something minimally confrontational like that. Congrats on your workouts :)
Be careful that the dress doesn’t get too big! That acually happened to me in the days before my wedding and it was a nightmare!

Sally March 4, 2009 at 9:47 am

Your interaction at the first gym is ridiculous!

I know you’re trying to drop a few pounds and not count calories, but a green smoothie for beakfast and veggie soup for lunch doesn’t seem like enough food, especially with a gym workout thrown in. Take care of yourself!

Hangry Pants March 4, 2009 at 11:00 am

Congratulations on your workout! I know you’ve been frustrated with that, so you must have felt wonderful!!!

Diana (soap & chocolate) March 4, 2009 at 11:09 am

YEAH! Definitely do the farmer’s market! I think that’s the perfect opportunity for your bakery – I love the baked stuff at my local market.

Congrats on getting back into the workout routine! Sorry it came with annoying people. :)

I need to jump on the Bandwagon

Michelle March 5, 2009 at 7:35 am

Im soo happy you are feeling better:) It DOES feel good to work out after an injury….im sure you are staring to feel like your self again. I have been struggling with motivation lately….im not sure if its the cold weather but i seem to have lost it. Im still working out but i really have to mentally struggle with myself. Im hoping this will pass because I love to feel strong and healthy. I saw that you have done the 30 day shred…lol….I ordered that a few months ago and I love it!! I use it when I dont feel like driving to the gym. Well if anything will get me back to being motivated its your blog:) Thankyou.

hello. i don’t see what’s so bad about what the gym did to you.

they essentially said: “you can work out here today, but you’re going to need to fill out the online offer at home.”

big deal!

you act all aghast at having to go home to sign up, but the gym told you you didn’t have to, and YOU WERE GOING TO GO HOME TO GET DRESSED ANYWAY!!!
