Beauty Product Reviews

Good afternoon!

I hope everyone is having a great day!

I realized last night after my slew of food videos and FAQ’s, that I haven’t done a beauty product review in a while! So here we go!!!

Beauty Product Review #1:

Maybelline Colossal Volume-Express Mascara

I was hesitant to buy this mascara without checking out the reviews on Makeup Alley first, but I was desperate! It was on sale and I decided what-the-heck.

My opinion? The brush was surprisingly almost clump-free. This surprised me because most of the volumizing mascaras that I have tried have been clumpy and gunky. This one wasn’t. I gave the wand a quick sweep with a tissue before using. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t get any clumps on my lashes. The mascara gave my lashes great definition, lots of volume, and still didn’t weigh them down. I curl my lashes with an eyelash curler before applying mascara and I can always tell when a mascara is too heavy because it takes the curl out. This one didn’t. Yawhoo! I just took a peek mid-afternoon and there was no flaking. I will have to wait until tonight to give my final stamp of approval though. I also judge a mascara based on how it looks at the end of a 10-hour day and how easily it comes off with makeup remover. This was rated 3.5/5 on Makeup Alley. I am a bit surprised that this isn’t higher, but I find mascara reviews tend to be quite low across the board.

Speaking of which…

Neutrogena Ultra-Soft Eye Makeup Remover Pads

My opinion? I was not impressed with these! I admit, I was sucked into the idea of having a one-step makeup remover. I typically have always used a cotton swab with liquid eye makeup remover in the past. I loved the idea of having it all built into one! I wasn’t impressed with this product though. The pads were almost dried out. They weren’t moist enough to really take the make-up off. Yes, they are very soft and delicate, but this product just didn’t deliver. I have to run a bit of water over them to really get them moist and able to work properly. Thumbs down! This product was rated 2.5/5 on Makeup Alley!

Dove Pro-Age Neck and Chest Serum

My opinon? I got this on clearance at the grocery store of all places! It was on sale for $2 so I couldn’t say no. I love the idea of using a chest and neck serum because it is one place that I always overlook when moisturizing! I have been using it for a couple of weeks and I’m not too impressed. I have noticed a slight improvement in my skin (it is less dry), but not much. I think I would have better results with my regular Nivea cream! I wouldn’t waste your money on it personally. I will continue to use it up, but I won’t be buying it again. I just checked and this product was only rated 2.7/5 on Makeup Alley- guess I am not the only one!

I’ve been using Maybelline • Full and Soft Mascara after seeing its great review on Makeup Alley.

It got a 4/5 with 1984 reviews!

I cannot stand clumpy mascara.. it’s one of my biggest pet peeves but I have been using this for two weeks so far and I have been clump free. Here’s hoping it lasts :)

I’ve also been using Neutrogena • Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Intensive Night Cream.

It got 4.3/5 with 79 reviews and 86% would buy it again. I have found it to be really good for my sensitive skin and it leaves it feeling SO soft. I highly recommend it!

Thanks for the mascara review! I’m just about at the point where I need a new tube…

As for moisturizers, my friend got me hooked on this Arbonne stuff when she was selling it, and I swear, it’s THE BEST moisturizer line I’ve ever used, and trust me, I’ve used a TON. The eye cream in particular is so effective, I notice in my eyes when I don’t use it! It’s called NutriminC RE9…pricey, but seriously amazing.

(stepping off Arbonne soapbox now)

I really like that mascara. My little sister got me hooked on it. Apparently it’s all the rage amongst the 16 year old set.

The best makeup remover I have ever used was one my boyfriend put in my stocking this year. Almay oil-free make up remover towelettes.

hi Angela! I love your blog. Also, yay for yoga, can’t wait to hear! I am a yoga teacher and love when others get excited about it!

Also, I love my St. Ives Apricot face scrub. Oil free and exfoliates.. use it everyday!

Also, we both love spelt! I put my fave spelt bread on my blog today, and I know you also love spelt! Have you every tried to make your own almond milk on your spelt flakes or do you use a boxed kind?

Hi Angela… I’m a lurker and fellow Canadian… and I just wanted to say that I don’t know whereabouts in the GTA you live, but I was at the Bulk Barn at Dixie Outlet Mall today and found Celestial Seasonings English Toffee tea! Seems to be a bit closer than out west, anyway :)

Almay One Coat Triple Effect mascara was a dud! I usually love Almay products but this was so clumpy and dry. The brush was all spikey and yucky, like it had been scrapped along the side of the tube 100 times. Its okay if I declump the wand with a tissue but I won’t be buying it again!

Thanks for the comprehensive reviews, as always!

~le sigh~ I used to be a die-hard Maybelline cosmetics user, but then I found out that they test on animals so they’ve been cut from my makeup bag (along with 90% of the stuff in there, sadly). Thank goodness I stumbled across Marcelle’s ultimate lash mascara – it volumizes just as well as any product from the ‘mean’ companies. I really like most of their skincare products as well (plus they are a Cdn company). If you are interested in learning more about cruelty free companies, check out this – you can search by company, product type, etc to find animal friendly products.

I use one 5x before throwing it out to get all the corners.

Maybe you had an opened tub?

Thanks for the reviews! I was in the market for a new mascara and I love Maybelline :)

I have been using Almay’s makeup remover pads (the oil-free version) for years and I love them- they get all my mascara/eyeliner/etc off without any tugging. The CVS version is also great!

I know this is old but I had to add: I was similarly disappointed with those make up remover pads! I always wear water proof mascara and a good make up remover is essential in removing it. Those pads couldn’t TOUCH my mascara, I was quite frustrated and trudged back to the clinique counter to pick up my tried and true liquid make up remover…. ultimately spending more money in the long run.
