Hey guys

I hope everyone is enjoying a safe, happy, and healthy long weekend!

Oh and errr…catching up on much needed sleep like Sketchie!

We bought him a cat bed, but he prefers this box lid- go figure!

Here we go with Saturday’s eats!

Breakfast: 9am

Green monster (kale, hemp milk, liquid garlic, ice, 1/2 c blueberries, 1 tiny brown banana, spirulina)

Little did I know, I was off for what would be the run of my life!

Saturday my body didn’t tell me to pull back, in fact it said to me ‘Eat your heart out and rock this run!’ So that is just what I did.

I have never had a training run that was this moving. Something was in the air, that I know. It was maybe the most beautiful morning we have had all summer long. Crisp air, no humidity, blue skys, green grass.

I saw about 50-60 cyclists, lots of people doing yardwork, etc. Everyone said good morning and many of them had a little chat with me as I ran by. It lifted my spirit so much, especially because I was doing the murder hill route.

And get this.

I saw the most beautiful scene of nature I think I have ever come across. I was at mile 6 and struggling a bit (miles 4 onward are uphill) and I saw three of the most beautiful deer come out of the woods.

[Note. Picture from google images! lol]

Ok, ok, so they didn’t leap the fence, they crawled through the bottom, but who’s keeping track? In my mind, they leaped over the fence. bahahaha.

I watched the deer and they bounced so gracefully away all the way across the field and down a farm road. It was SO BEAUTIFUL. I had a big grin on my face for the next half mile.

During other moments of the run, I also felt quite moved for different reasons. I thought about Chris and the races I am running in his honour. It is a bit hard for me to really put into words exactly how I was feeling on this run, but it was nothing short of euphoric and deeply meaningful to me.

At mile 7, I saw a bunch of horses in a field. At mile 9, I saw 2 cute bunnies. Got me through the last mile.

The run:

1 hour 41 mins

Distance: 10.08 miles

Pace: 10.02 min/mile

Max HR: 173 bpm

Avg HR: 152 bpm

It was the longest I have ever run in my life! By 0.08 miles, lol. I was going to stop at 10 miles, but I thought why not break a new personal record? I also beat my Wednesday run by 3 minutes. I felt so fast and strong!

Immediately after my run, I had a hit of protein from my Amazing Grass powder:

Lunch quickly followed my refreshing shower. I was starving like a monster!

Lunch: 12:30pm

Darvida Crackers and Salsa

A Tabouli + Black bean + Tomato puree + Lettuce wrap:

Just awesome.

A bagged Sencha Green Tea Eric picked up for me yesterday. It was decent for a bagged Sencha.

It had been a while since I put lettuce on my wraps and I really loved it. I need to do this more often!

Edited to add: I also had an apple.

Then we were off to for our special weekend excursion!

Any guesses where we went?

If you guessed Toronto you are right! We had an awesome weekend of events, eats, and friends.

And I had lunch number two…

This veggie sub and package of crackers didn’t even put a dent in my hunger!!

Off for our excursion!

We went to the EX…

Saw the air show…

Judged sand castles…

Judged flowers and vegetables…

The veggies made me hungry! haha

For dinner Eric took me to his favourite pizza place:

I got the Diana

And a side of pizza sauce for dipping. It was delicious!

I ate every last bite!

And then had a grand ol’ time with friends.

While en route, I had a Refresh Glo Bar (not pictured).

I was super tired last night after the 10 miler and walking for about 6 hours! I just stuck to 1 beer and called it a night.

It was such a fun long weekend getaway.

We have more fun in store today, with another possible trip to Fresh- stay tuned!

Let’s just say Sketchie is not a morning person!

Here are the delicious eats I ate on Friday

My morning started off with a successful waffle mission!

Breakfast: 8:30am

1 huge whole wheat banana waffle with 2 T maple syrup + 2 T coconut oil (SO good!)

Vegan Whole Wheat Banana Waffles

Ingredients:

1 ripe banana

2 cup water

1/2 cup oats

1.5 cups w/w flour

1 t cinnamon

pinch nutmeg

1 t vanilla

1-1.5 t baking powder

Directions: Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix wet ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Add wet to dry and stir until just incorporated.

I used coconut oil to grease the waffle pan and it worked quite well.

It was soooooo yummy!

Snack: 11am

For a mid-morning snack I had a green monster because no day is complete without one!

It was just a simple one as I was short on time (kale, hemp milk, ice, liquid garlic, wheatgrass, and a tiny brown banana). Green Perfecto.

Lunch was another late one (seems to be a theme this week!!!) since I was bogged down in my work and I had a run outside around 1pm. The good news is yesterday I got caught up on almost all of my paperwork! I probably have about 3 hours left to finish this weekend.

Lunch: 2:45pm

This is something I whipped up that I like to call …

Baked Burrito Pizzas

Ingredients:

1 pita

‘Pizza’ Sauce (2 T soy yogurt and 1/2 cup tomato puree)

1/2 cup black beans, cooked

1/2 zucchini, shredded or sliced (I did both)

Parsley

Directions: Line a baking sheet with parchment or tin foil to catch drippings. Carefully divide pita in half. Mix sauce together and cover the pitas with sauce. Sprinkle with beans and zucchini. Bake for about 5 mins at 350. For the final few minutes broil on low-med, but watch it very carefully as the pita burns easily. Remove with a spatula from baking sheet and place onto a large plate. Fold into a burrito and enjoy!

This was really fun and quite tasty!

Dessert was another Power me up apple crisp. I used spelt flakes instead of Glo-nola since I am out of it (note to self- make more asap!!!). I microwaved the cereal and to my surprise it got really chewy and had a nice texture.

Late afternoon snack was a small cup of cereal with almond milk:

And I had some crackers and salsa that were not photographed.

Dinner: 7:30pm

Friday’s dinner was another first for me- I made pesto!

I mixed 3.5 T pesto + 1 T EVOO + 1/3 cup water.

Then I cooked some whole wheat pasta. Such a simple yet delicious dish with so much flavour! I had about 2 cups of the pesto pasta and 3/4 of a zucchini.

I also had some pan-seared Zucchini (just divine on its own!)

Sometimes the most simple meals are the best!

Dessert was one of my new obsessions!

I found these last week in Loblaws/Superstore in the organic freezer section. I was really craving candy, but since it has been so long since I have bought candy, I wanted to keep my good streak. When I found these coconut bars I knew I had to have them!!

It is made mostly from organic coconut, water, and evaporated cane juice. As you can see in the picture below, there is actual shredded coconut in the bar! OH MY, I almost freaked out when I tasted it. So delicious and really chewy from the coconut.

Best popsicle I have ever had!

I also had about 3 of these teas today…

Nighttime snack: 9pm

An Endure Glo Bar (My favourite flavour)

And that wraps up day 4!

~~~~~~
Sketchie waves hello to his peeps.
Enjoy your day!
We’re off for a special excursion
PS- I read online last night that many knee sleeves are made with neoprene and that neoprene is a fairly common allergy. Has anyone tried a cotton-elastic knee sleeve before?
Happy Friday of the long weekend!!! Wow, this week FLEW by didn’t it???
As promised here is what I ate on Thursday…
What I ate: Day 3
Breakfast: 8am
Speaking of using up produce, I made my first hot elixir green monster yesterday. I tried to replicate the Fresh Flu Fighter elixir that I had. I was missing celery and Echinacea, but it’s all good.
The mornings have been so cold here lately and I have had such a chill until about 2pm. I wanted something very hot to warm me up and this seemed like it would fit the bill.
Don’t Get [A] Cold Green Monster
3 organic kale leaves, microwaved 120 secs. in water
1.5 cups water
1 pinch cayenne pepper
1 T lemon juice
3 small organic carrots
1/2 organic tomato
Squirt Kyolic Garlic extract
Pinch ground ginger (wished I had fresh)
Scoop Manitoba Harvest Protein Powder
1 T chia seeds
Black pepper
Directions: Blend all ingredients together. Microwave for about 90 seconds on high. Stir to distribute heat evenly and carefully test the temperature. Enjoy with a spoon!
I came fairly close to replicating what Fresh makes although this is a GM and not a juice.
My advice is to not look down if you make one of these because it ain’t pretty (especially first thing in the morning). I am definitely going to experiment with lots of hot green monsters this winter! They are so much fun.
Mid-morning Snack: 10:30am
I had some tea (fennel + green tea) and a small cup of Flax Plus cereal with hemp milk for my snack.
You may have noticed that I have been using tea bags again. Well, that is because my beloved loose leaf Japanese Sencha tea cannot be found anywhere near where I live. I have checked 4 grocery stores or more! I bought my loose leaf in the Asian section at Loblaws when I lived in Toronto, but the Loblaws around here don’t have the same Asian sections.   I hope I find some asap. It is my fav! Tea bags just aren’t the same in terms of strength. I love my sencha very, very strong!
Lunch was very late again yesterday because I got caught up in paper work and receipt tracking…
I also spent a good portion of the day speaking with the tax agency, co-op vendor, and also baking an order of Endure Glo Bars (my favourite flavour!) + shipping.
The day flew by!
Lunch: 2:30pm
I mixed up some of the same Sweet and Sour Brown Rice and Chickpea Faux Casserole from the other night and threw it into a pita with soy yogurt.
It was delicious, but unfortunately lasted about 1 minute.
I was going to eat this apple, but then I thought to myself. That is a bit boring to write about.
So Mr. Green Apple went from this…
into something fabulous…
Power Me Up Apple Crisp
Ingredients:
1 granny smith, diced
1/2-1 t cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg
Glug or two of Almond milk
1/2 cup Glo-nola
Directions: Mix first 4 ingredients together and microwave for 60-90 seconds. Stir.  Add        Glo-nola, stir, and serve.
This apple crisp took literally 3 minutes to make and it was sooo gooey and delicious! Normally, I would add sugar to my apple crisps but this didn’t need it at all. The almond milk was key- it really made a gooey sauce that tasted much more decadent than it really was.
This lunch held me over a good 4.5 hours!
Late afternoon Snack: 6:30pm
Delicious Mary’s Crackers
x2…
Dinner: 7:30pm
I dug deep into my cupboards and discovered that I had this:
Can you believe I have never made Tabouli before? I’m sure the pre-packaged stuff doesn’t come close to homemade, but I figured I would give it a shot. I made mine healthier by using just 1 T of Olive Oil instead of the suggested 1/3 cup.
I have seen the lettuce wraps all over the blogs lately and I have been meaning to make one for a while.
The Tabouli was a bit plain and dull tasting on its’ own, so I spiced up the wraps with some minced garlic, lemon juice, balsamic vinaigrette, salsa, and soy yogurt. Much better!
These wraps gave me a Mexican Fiesta in my mouth! Super fun!!!
I also broke out the Christmas Mug for the first time in a while:
Christmas is right around the corner…hahaha!
I had a Fennel tea. I love this tea now.
I also had 8 Dar-Vida crackers for my grains (gotta have the grains!)
Dessert was a Spirit Glo Bar right out of the freezer. This was the first time I have had a frozen Glo Bar and I LOVED it.
It was really chewy and took a long time to eat. Yum!
From 8-11pm Eric and I worked on Glo Bakery paper work. Not fun, but very productive!
Around 11:30pm Eric and I were starving. I had my go-to emergency snack:
Late night snack:
1 English cuke + Balsamic dressing
I always say this snack is like eating crunchy water. Very light and refreshing.
~~~~~

This afternoon, I will be telling you all about a fun chia seed giveaway, my next waffle experiment, and show you how I am saving 2 hours a week with a new gadget I am in love with.

Enjoy your Friday!

I’m off to enter in receipts for most of the morning and then squeeze in a run over my lunch break.

Love. To. Run.

“My decision to run my first marathon was very deliberate. After I made the commitment, I discovered I was being guided by an inside force that I never knew existed. When things got tough, I tapped into this force. I know now that I’ll get through whatever life puts in my path.” ~Cindy Pepler, Seattle (from Marathon book)

This morning was hard! You didn’t really think I could go the whole day without talking did you?

Time to recap the day’s eats and events…

~~~~~~
Breakfast: 8am
Green Monster (Banana, water, chia, kale, liquid garlic, coconut oil)
Mid-morning snack: 11am
Glo-nola (about 1 cup)
Around lunch time, I decided that I couldn’t delay my 10 mile run any longer! I was supposed to go first thing this morning, but I put it off. I messaged Caitlin on Gmail chat and issued a PLEA to her:
Me: Please tell me WHY I want to go on a 10 mile run!!!!
Caitlin: Because you’re awesome. and double digits are a unique brand of torture.
Me: haha yes they are. You do realize I’ve only run 10 miles once in my life? lol.
Caitlin: If you want to do your bucket list, you better start running. Please tell me you’re going outside.
Me: You are right…damnit!
Caitlin: The sooner you leave, the sooner you come back
Talk about boot camp instructor! haha. I needed that kick in the butt. I owe this run to Caitlin today!
This is what I packed for my run:
Small water bottle
Clementine in a baggie
Homemade Energy gel
The run:
Location: Murder hill route + area
Distance: 10 miles
Duration: 1 hour 43 mins. 38 secs.
Pace: 10:24 min/mile
Max heart rate: 171 bpm
Avg heart rate: 154 bpm
This run was LONG and I felt absolutely amazing to finish it! It’s only the second time I have run 10 miles in my life. The run was pretty grueling because of all the huge hills. My energy was quite low for most of miles 5-10. After mile 4.5 it is ALL uphill. A slow, steady climb up the mountain. Going there I feel great and then once I turn around I am reminded of the brutal climb ahead of me!
I used the snacks as motivation to make the time go by quicker.
I told myself:
At mile 4, I could stop and have 4 Clementine slices + water
At mile 5, more water + walking
At mile 6.25, 1/2 of my homemade energy gel, water
At mile 7.50, the other half of my energy gel, water
At mile 8.50, the rest of my Clementine slices, water
Somehow this got me through it. I was reading something in my marathon book last night and the quote said something like this:
“I like to split up my marathon into how many water stations are left. After my 1st water station, I tell myself  ‘only 11 water stations to go.’”
I think that is a fun mental trick and it really works to break it up! I will definitely be using this technique during my half on the 27th. Only 2 more long runs until my half!
~~~~~

When I got home I realized that I only had 1 hour or so to prepare, pack, invoice, and ship out my orders of the day (they have to go out by 4pm). So I was in a mad rush!!! Because one of the packages was for VegNews Magazine, in the US, it took extra time because I had to do all of the customs paper work. I made it out of the house at 3:45pm and got there just in time! Because I was in such a rush, I didn’t have time to eat until 4pm. As you may know I always try to eat food immediately after getting back from my long run, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way. Such is life!

Here was my very late lunch: 4pm

I had an awesome recovery lunch though!

1 can Health Valley Lentil soup (favourite kind by HV), 3 T soy yogurt, curry powder, 3 T bean dip, 1/2 cup salsa, 8 Dar-vida crackers

The yogurt was sooooo good in this soup! It made it super creamy. I had a little bit with each bite.

This soup provided me with 16 grams of protein (thank you lentils) and the bean dip and crackers provided me with another 12 grams.

So good to mix these together.

This total lunch provided me with 34 grams of protein. Muscles in repair! Woot woot!

After lunch, I wanted to pull a George Costanza and sleep under my desk. Long runs make me so tired. But I had lots of invoicing and other work to do so I kept at it!

Not long after lunch I had this wonderful snack:

Afternoon snack: 5:30pm

Yellow Delicious organic apple with organic smooth peanut butter

This just might be one of my all time favourite snacks (I feel like I say this A LOT, lol).

For dinner, I was REALLY tempted to call Eric and ask him to pick up Subway on the way home. I debated it for about 5 minutes and then I told myself, ‘Ange, just get in the kitchen and make something quick. You will save $15 bucks!’

It worked.

I whipped up something quick yet delicious with leftover chickpeas and brown rice.

Sweet & Sour Brown Rice and Chickpea Faux Casserole

Ingredients:

2 cups cooked brown rice

1 cup cooked chickpeas

3 T Sweet & Sour Sauce (I used Mr Spice Organic)

2 T salsa

1 t paprika

Directions: Mix together, heat in microwave and sprinkle with pumpkin seeds!

Serves 2 (or 1 person who just ran 10 miles!)

Oh this was gooood.

With some cherry tomatoes on their last legs.

and a high protein/high fibre pita for scooping.

Ok, I am seriously ready for a nap now! lol. I am stuffed and content, but sleepy. I have this Glo Bar on reserve should I need a snack later tonight.

EDIT: I ate this bar @ 9pm (obviously!!)

Oh and for the record, last night I did end up having the orange and also 1/3 cup Glo-nola.

Happy September 1st!

Reflecting back on the month of August, I had a lot of fun events going on in my life.

Weddings, birthdays, bachelorette parties, family get togethers, anniversaries, etc! Through all of the fun, I also started to throw frequent parties in my mouth. As a result, my pants have been feeling a bit tight lately!

So as we begin a new month and a new season, I decided to rein things in a little and have my pants fitting a bit better. My goal is to stick to a very healthy 3 meals and 2-3 snacks per day and eliminate the extra mindless snacking that has been going on for some time.

Each day I will do one long recap of the day’s eats. I think it will be more helpful if I put everything into one post so you can see it at a glance.

Let’s begin!

~~~~~
What I Ate: Day 1
Breakfast: 8am
Green Monster (kale, hemp milk, coconut oil, prickly pear, chia, ice)
Snack: 10:30am
1 cup of Nature’s Path Flax Plus cereal, 1/2 serving of Glo-nola, and 1/2 cup of hemp milk:
I was super busy doing computer work and I didn’t break until 1:45pm for lunch. I was starving! I could have stopped around 12:30, but I had a great momentum going and wanted to finish what I was working on. I replied to about 100 emails that were starred in my inbox for the past 6 weeks!
I immediately had a Clementine before I prepped lunch to tame the tummy.
My second tea of the day: Fennel and Chai Green Tea.
I hated Fennel at first because it tastes a bit like black licorice, but now I am used to the taste. Fennel is supposed to help curb hunger too. Last night I had some when I was looking for late night snacks, and it helped tie me over until bedtime. It doesn’t make a huge difference but it helps a bit.
Lunch: 1:45pm
For lunch I had a can of this no salt added Black Bean organic soup by Health Valley:
I have been eating this soup for about a year now and I am still shocked every time I taste it. It is crazy how ingrained we are to having heavily salted soups. If you want to give yourself a salt wake up call, try this soup- but be warned! I added some paprika for more flavour because it certainly lacks it.
I dipped a high protein/high fibre pita in it and it was divine!
This lunch was gobbled up very fast. I t wasn’t enough to satisfy my hunger though!
I also had 4 Dar-vida crackers and some cantaloupe that was on its’ last legs.
It was sooo juicy!
I could have eaten more food, but thankfully after my tea my hunger signal finally traveled to my brain. It seriously does take me 20 minutes to tell that I am full- hate that!
and some Mary’s crackers right before I made dinner because I was fading fast…
Dinner: 7pm
Tonight for dinner I tried to recreate the amazing bowl I had at Fresh the other day!
I came pretty darn close too!   It was delicious!! The only thing I didn’t have was the tofu. I used Chickpeas for my protein instead.
Vegan Chickpea Coconut Curry
Stir-fry the following:
2 cups baby carrots
2 peppers
1 zucchini
3 T plain soy yogurt
1-2 t curry powder (to taste)
1 heaping T of coconut oil
Heat chickpeas and brown rice and serve the stir-fry over top.
This was AWESOME! Yummy in my tummy!
My serving had about 2 cups veggies, 1 cup chickpeas, 1/2 cup brown rice.
With rose water
Of course I went back for seconds of the veggies (x2!)
Oh this was so lovely. Definitely a keeper.
Dessert was some left over Glo-nola (about 1/4 cup) (I’m officially obsessed!):
PM Snack
I had this orange for a snack and about 1/3 cup Glo-nola.
So there you have it! My first day of official food blogging.
Do you ever have one of those mornings that sucks before it even begins? Well, that was today for Eric and I. A bunch of small things were just going wrong. No big deal in the grand scheme of things of course, but they still can be quite annoying when they happen!
I started the morning by trying out the new Waffle Iron. Total bust. The waffle was all stuck to the sides and we couldn’t even remove it. I didn’t think I was supposed to spray it since it is non-stick, but now I am thinking I should? Are there any pro waffle makers out there?
I also concocted a vegan recipe, so that might have had something to do with it. I used 100% whole wheat flour, chia seeds, almond milk, baking powder/soda.
We actually forgot to take a picture of the final product because we were frantically scraping the sides to get it out! Eric was also in a rush to get to work. It was a total bust though!
~~~~

Then I decided to improve my day by making a green monster. Those are always good, right?

I finally took the plunge and tried the Prickly Pear.

How to prepare: Cut of both ends. Slice or score a slit through the pear as shown above. Take the knife and carefully cut the skin away from the pear.

I read that prickly pears had very hard seeds in them and boy were they right. You could chip your tooth on one of them if you weren’t careful. The taste of the pear was quite nice, although not something that really wowed my taste buds.

They are edible seeds though, so I decided to throw the whole thing in my green monster.

There are 40 calories, 4 grams of fibre (nice!), and 1 gram of protein in a prickly pear.

Ingredients:

1 cup Almond breeze

4 small organic kale leaves, steamed

1 Prickly pear

1 scoop Amazing Grass Wheat Grass

1 T organic coconut oil

Ice

I thought my blender would blend the seeds, but boy was I wrong.

I totally broke my blender!!!!!!!!!!

It started leaking out of the bottom. My brand new blender that just got shipped back to me is leaking again.

The green monster itself was a total bust since the seeds were still floating about. I tried straining it, but it didn’t work too well. I had to take a sip- remove seeds from mouth- take a sip- repeat. No fun.

Oye. So now I don’t know what to do regarding my blender! Me and Kitchen Aid Blenders just do not mix.

[Bad pun but I needed something to cheer me up!]

I took some pictures with my new macro lens to cheer me up.

Eric really didn’t have a great morning!

Yesterday he was weeding in the yard (in his new birthday shoes) and for whatever reason when he went to put on his shoes today before work, they were ORANGE. We’re not sure if it was pollen on them or just water stains, but they looked ruined. He was pretty upset about it. He ended up putting them in the wash on the gentle cycle.

Then he was going to leave for work and he realized he got all this dirt on his new jeans and he had to change them. He also couldn’t find his papers he needed for work. And he finally left and forgot his cell phone and had to come back! He was not in a good mood I tell you and I could see why. I tried to cheer him up and turn his mood around, but it wasn’t an easy task.

I started to think about something I read last night while in bed.

I am currently reading this Marathon book by Hal Higdon. It has been a decent read so far. I disagree some of the things he says in the book, but I also think a lot of his words are helpful in some chapters.

At the end of the book, he gives a bunch of quotes from people who have run a marathon. It is a bunch of ‘advice’ if you will.

This one really touched me deeply, so I thought I would share it:

I started to cry last night in bed when I read that! Don’t you just feel for Peggy and imagine the hardship she must have went through?

Stories like this really put things in perspective.

When we have a bad morning, or a bad day, or a bad month we need to keep the faith and remind ourselves of the big picture. Many of the daily annoyances that we encounter are just that- annoyances- and nothing more.

Don’t let a bad moment affect how you feel the rest of the day. If you ‘mess up’ and eat a doughnut for breakfast, forget about it and put it behind you. We have the power within us to turn it all around.

Yes, we had a crappy morning, but big whoop. It happens to everyone at some point.

I am going to make the rest of the day as awesome as it should be.

~~~~~
How do you turn a bad day around?
~~~~~

Ange Does Food Blogging

I have an announcement as I mentioned in yesterday’s post! Many of you have asked me if I could show you what a typical day of eats looks like for me. As you know I have never really photographed everything I eat, but I think it is time that I tried it out for a few days. I hope to do so for the next several days so you can get a glimpse into what average days of eating look like for me.

With all the festivities going on in the month of August, my eating has been all over the map and I have been grazing and snacking much more than I should. I think this will help me get back to my ‘happy place’- 3 meals and 2 snacks a day and stick to it.

Have a great Tuesday!
