Early Morning Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal

« Jump to Recipe »

Every morning around 6am my alarm clock goes off. It starts quietly and gets progressively louder and more annoying if I try to fall back to sleep. I’m usually in the middle of some random dream and I think about it for a few minutes as I try to will myself back to sleep.

If my alarm clock fails to rise me, it has no choice but to resort to other methods: walking up the length of my body, kneading my stomach and chest with sharp nails (ow!), purring – inflected as if it’s a question, and shooting laser beams through my eyelids to will them open. No matter what, do not open your eyes. I repeat: Do not make eye contact with the alarm clock!!!

If you do, it’s over.

Meet my alarm clock – highly reliable with a 0.000001% fail rate.

Sketchie-074732

[This is Sketchie’s “I’m HUNGRY and haven’t had breakfast yet AND I happen to hate you right now” face. I snapped this while we were away over the long weekend. Sketchie was particularly unhappy that we slept til about 7:30 that morning!! gasp]

After 5 or 10 minutes of playing dead, I give in and stumble downstairs ever so slowly as Sketchie rubs his head along the staircase railing. He has now morphed back into Happy Cat and he’s prancing along to his feeding spot.

After I feed him, he ditches me and goes back to sleep (how nice), leaving me alone until Eric gets up.

I notice the morning feels a bit chillier than usual and make my first batch of hot oatmeal in a long time. The weather is dreary and creamy peanut butter oats sound like the perfect solution!

To add a fun twist to this bowl, I partially caramelized a ripe banana in the pot before cooking the oats with a tiny bit of non-dairy butter. This was just to intensify the flavours a bit more. Then I swirled in half the peanut butter and cooked the oatmeal as normal for about 8-10 minutes.

The result is a creamy bowl of oats lightly sweetened with banana and highlighted with cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. It smells heavenly! On top, I added more peanut butter, a good dose of cinnamon, nuts, and a drizzle of pure maple syrup. It was just about perfect.

Oh yum! I have been going a little crazy with hot oatmeal over the past couple of weeks — ever since the nights started cooling down. In fact, I recently discovered slow cooker steel cut oats and they are AMAZING!!! I love the PB/banana combo!!

My bengal does the EXACT same thing. At the same time, though this morning she felt 5:45 a good time to start this really quite half meow that she has recently developed. And when I finally got up to feed her (6 am) she does this really loud exasperated meow, that sounds angry that i made her wait.

hah that is EXACTLY like Sketchie! He does this weird purr/meow like a question mark almost like “feed me please?”, then the meows get progressively more loud and fed up like “FEED ME NOW!!!!”.

I really love that picture of Sketchie! It’s perfect, complete with dramatic lighting and statuary in the background. He’s such a beautiful cat! And that oatmeal looks amazing too!

Oohh, never had oatmeal with peanut butter before.. I’ll have to switch this up with my normal recipe.

By the way, where did you find such an adorable and beautifully colored alarm clock? hehe

HI Angela

Every time I try and access your site from my home computer, it is taken over by an HP computer add for designing a bag in conjunction with Project Runway! I can’t find a way around it. It doesn’t seem to happen on my work computer (you are my home page!) so it probably has to do with my security settings.
Has anyone else complained of this? It is driving me crazy. I just wanted you to know in case they were a sponsor.

Love your site and look forward to each new post!
Have a great day!
Jean

Hey Jean,

Sorry bout this, looks like it was something to do with the Ad itself. I was able to reproduce this and we had a few more complaints. We’ve removed it for the time being and asked the Ad provider to look into it.

Thanks so much for letting us know though!
Eric

I adore this post! My cat Miso is the same… she gets so desperate for us to get out of bed, once we do get up and feed her she’s ready to pass out and cuddle. Oh the life of a cat…

It’s been a long time since I’ve had just a simple bowl of warm cozy oats… most definitely doing that this weekend!

Creamy peanut butter anything always makes dreary weather more tolerable! They look great.

And so does Sketchie. What a great expression!

Ha, I’ve seen that video before – definitely a good one!

Many fruits go well with oatmeal, but my favorite is always banana. :)

This looks amazing! I haven’t have oatmeal in a while but I think you may have inspired me to find some time and make this over the weekend. I LOVE the idea of the caramelized banana! Brilliance.
Our cats are vultures in the morning, too. Even though we get up around 6:00am we have made it a point to not feed them until 9:00am ish and they have actually started to be a little (and I mean a little) less crazy and annoying in the morning. I do have to say, there is something about those furry little heads nudging you and that soft purring sound, that is so comforting and welcoming to wake up too, though.

I should have checked out your page before i dashed out of the house of this morning leaving behind 3 meowing cats. looks unbelievably creamy and thick. my kind of oatmeal.

and the little video is freaking hilarious. (sharing it on my FB now) that’s how we used to wake up with 3 cats in the room, until we gave them their own room. though they still call for food at 6 am. i swear all cats are synched for that time.

I literally read this blog post in bed as I was trying to convince myself to throw off the covers and go make a decent breakfast, and the moment I saw this I flew into the kitchen to make it. DELICIOUS! Such a fantastic warm weather alternative to my usual oat-banana-PB morning smoothie.

I am allergic to bananas but I can have them cooked or baked. I may have to try this to see if the cook time is enough to release the proteins so I can eat it without allergy incidence. Five minutes of caramelizing plus another 8-10 minutes might do the trick. Any more banana tips you might have would be welcome! Thanks for this recipe. Love your site!
