Blendtec Giveaway!

Nothing like a Blendtec giveaway and 3 new smoothie recipes to kick off the weekend, right?

Happy Friday indeed!

Blendtec sent me a refurbished Blendtec Total Blender to review on the blog. I’m going to have a fun little giveaway to get your own engines revving and give this beast away to one lucky reader.

And boy, is this thing a beast!

As you may know, I purchased a Vitamix last year and I’m in love with it. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the Blendtec. My standards are pretty high when it comes to blenders, so I’m a tough cookie smoothie!

This is a refurbished machine, which means that it was slightly used but it was inspected and processed in the Blendtec factory to restore it to ‘like new’ condition. Honestly, you’d never be able to tell that this machine wasn’t brand spanking new! It is in mint condition. You can also save quite a bit of money if you purchase their refurbished models.

Plus, you get to be all eco-friendly by recycling…what’s not to love?

Here are some specs:

  • You can make smoothies, fresh juice, ice cream, milkshakes, cappuccinos, margaritas, soups, sauces, bread dough, dressings, salsas and more
  • The Total Blender comes with an exclusive Smart-Touch Technology which means when a cycle button is pushed, the Total Blender automatically speeds up and slows down, then shuts off when the cycle is complete.
  • It turns ice to snow and actually comes with an Ice-Crushing Guarantee and has1560 Watts of blending power
  • Blender includes: 32 oz. BPA free wet + dry container, Total Blender Motor Base, FourSide Pitcher, Vented Pitcher Lid, Recipe Book, Owner’s Manual, instructional CD
  • It has 6 pre-programmed blend cycles (below) that are designed to produce optimum results for a range of blending tasks such as soups and sauces or whole juice. The instruction manual tells you how long each cycle goes for and it’s also displayed on the screen when blending.
  • The pitcher is a wet and dry which means you don’t have to purchase another container like you do with the Vitamix.

After reading up on this bad boy, I threw a blending party and Eric and I got to be the lucky taste-testers!

Of course, the ultimate test for any blender is a Green Monster smoothie made with KALE! If you’ve ever made a smoothie with kale and it was chunky, I feel your pain. I suffered through that for a couple years before I finally bought my Vitamix beast.

After putting in my Green Monster ingredients, I hit the ‘smoothie’ button. I quickly realized that the smoothie setting (30 seconds) was probably not intended for Green Monsters because the greens didn’t pulverize enough after 30 seconds. I ended up blending for 3 smoothie cycles (1.5 minutes) instead of one.

After 1.5 minutes, it blended well and the kale was virtually smooth, but perhaps not as smooth as the Vitamix. It was a really close call, but I found the Blendtec was a tiny bit more coarse in texture as compared to my GM’s made with the Vitamix.

But again, it was so close, it’s almost a non-issue. And I’m sure many people don’t blend kale like my crazy self!

edited to add: Some of you told me to use the LIQUIFY setting for kale as it works much better! Good to know. :)

Up next, I made a few fruit smoothies and I was very pleased with the outcome. Open-mouthed smile

Strawberry Cherry Basil                         Mango Coconut Cream                           Banana Data Cinnamon

These smoothies turned out I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E.

I tried another ultimate test for this beast- grinding flax. I’ve used a few blenders in the past that didn’t grind flax well, so I was anxious to test it out with the Blendtec.

Let’s just say it was PULVERIZED! Amazing job!!!

All in all, I think the Blendtec Total Blender is a great machine.

Here are some specifics that I love about it:

  • Shorter height (15”) compared to Vitamix (20.5”) which means that it will fit under any counter top
  • Easy to remove lid (I find the Vitamix lid is hard to put on and off)
  • BPA free container
  • Digital display (while not necessary, it is sleek and fun)
  • No need for a Tamper stick like you need with the Vitamix. (The Tamper stick is included with a Vitamix to help push down and process ingredients. No need for this with the Blendtec)
  • Contemporary & sleek design! Looks great on the counter.
  • Wet + dry container all in one

Now how about some of those smoothie recipes to kick off the weekend?

Mango Coconut Cream Smoothie

  • 1.25 cups coconut water
  • 1 cup frozen mango chunks
  • 1/2 frozen banana (or 1/4 cup coconut ice cream)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds or ground flax (optional)

Strawberry Cherry Basil Smoothie

(My fav new smoothie!)

  • 1/4 cup (or a bit less) loosely packed basil (trust me it WORKS!)
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 3/4 cup pitted and frozen cherries
  • 1/2 cup hulled and frozen strawberries
  • Chia seeds or flax (optional)

Banana Date Cinnamon Smoothie

  • 1 frozen banana (peel before freezing)
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 pitted medjool date
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

By the way, what the heck is this? Nooooooooooo!!!!

I have been pining for a Vitamix or Blendtec for a while now but the price has kept me waiting and wishing. It has never occurred to me to look for refurbished blender so if I don’t win this amazing giveaway I will have to look into that. Any idea where I can purchase a refurbished one?

Kerry Andrews August 12, 2011

Hi Angela,

I really enjoy reading your blog. As someone who has just started to be concerned with what I am eating, your recipes are very helpful and tasty. This machine looks like it rocks, and plus it looks fun to use!

Dragonflyrunner August 12, 2011

I love green monsters and it is a great way to get veggies in my kids before they even start the day! I would LOVE a Blendtec blender.

Vanessa August 12, 2011

crossing my fingers! i need a blender so badly. mine smells like it is going to catch on fire every time i use it. eep!

vanessa August 12, 2011

I would really love a more high powered blender! Mine broke a few weeks ago, and I’ve been using my food processor for smoothies : / it takes longer, but it’s better than nothing! This one looks like it’d do the trick.

Erin August 12, 2011

oh my goodness I’ve been dreaming of a vitamix or something like it for so long now!! and those smoothies look amaaaazing. Will be trying them out to bring with my on my road trip across the country tomorrow!! (gotta love big coolers!)

Kierstan @ Life {and running} in Iowa August 12, 2011

I just cleared off a space on my counter for this beauty! :)

Sarah S. August 12, 2011

What a great review! I’ve never read one from someone that has both Vitamix and Blendtec experience, so this is very helpful! Thanks also for the fantastic giveaway.

Colleen August 12, 2011

This blender would be an awesome addition to my kitchen!

justine August 12, 2011

I’ve been fantasizing about a new blender for some time now – I even added the vitamix to my Amazon wishlist – but in reality, I know I’m not in the financial position to drop more than $30 on a kitchen appliance. I have a B&D blender that is totally fine for liquids but if I’m blending frozen fruit I have to add a lot of liquid or it won’t move.

Jessica August 12, 2011

Oohh, would love a blendtec!

Jaci August 12, 2011

College student = I have a Walmart brand blender. Pretty sad stuff =P This one looks loooovely!

Emily Petersen August 12, 2011

I want to get one of these but I can’t decide, my coworker just got blendtec.. I don’t usually blend kale so maybe that’s my blender?! I like that u don’t have to have 2 containers and a stick!

Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat August 12, 2011

Oh my goodness, this thing is a BEAST!!!! If I win it, I think I’ll probably be having smoothies at every meal. Roommates might kill me because of the noise, but I’ll just make extra for them to keep them quiet. ;) What a fabulous giveaway, Ange!

Kara August 12, 2011

I would love to win this blender. To have a smooth green smoothie with kale is something I dream about every night!

marya August 12, 2011

Those smoothies look absolutely delicious! I can’t wait to give them a try!

Amy August 12, 2011

these smoothies all sound so delicious! I love that they are different and unique- I get stuck in a strawberry-banana-spinach-nut butter rut far too often and now I can’t wait to try some of these, especially BASIL IN A SMOOTHIE??? I’m so intrigued…….have a great weekend!

Rachel @ I'm Loving Today August 12, 2011

I’ve been holding out on getting a “fancy” blender for some time, and this one looks amazing! If I were to win I’d definitely make your Strawberry Cherry Basil Smoothie right away – it looks amazing, and I’m intrigued by the basil addition :)

Alex August 12, 2011

This would be awesome to win! Im excited to try the banana date smoothie!

Shaunna B. August 12, 2011

I would love to try this blender! My Oster is okay, but I could definitely do with an upgrade :-) Thanks for the chance!

Emily August 12, 2011

I need a new blender badly… mine leaks all the time! I haven’t had a green monster in months!

Meghan B. August 12, 2011

Oh man…I need this. My current blender belonged to my husband and his four college roommates. It takes for-ev-er to blend anything and leaves behind so many chunks.

Andria August 12, 2011

please please please!! gimme gimme gimme!! :D

Allison August 12, 2011

ohhhh…..can’t wait to try these recipes! Merci beaucoup :-)

Tamara W August 12, 2011

This is so great! I only have a terrible old blender that my mom gave me and it will never compare. I can’t afford a high-tech one at the moment so am working with my magic bullet, which I find is stronger than my actual blender (weird, right?) I’d love to try these recipes but I like my smoothies extremely smooth, and the machinery I have right now just won’t pulverize things smoothly enough. Hope to win!!

Brynne August 12, 2011

The smoothies look delicious. Thanks for the giveaway!

Jenn August 12, 2011

Oh my…my husband and I have been dreaming about getting a super awesome blender for ages. How fun–thanks for doing this giveaway!

Vanessa August 12, 2011

Ahhh I would LOVE to own one of these…it’s sad to say but I have never had a GREEN MONSTER!! I know what kind of girl am I?! All of the blenders I have owned have totally crapped out on me, and I haven’t had the funds…or the push I have needed to go out and splurge on a Vitamix..however, the Blendtec looks just as fabulous and I would love to be able to whip up all of your wonderful smoothies at home!! *Totally hoping I win this beauty* :)

Audra Diaz-Infante August 12, 2011

Love your website and I also love following you on twitter. I have been having a war with myself on purchasing a vitamix. It sounds like the Blendtec is a good blender. Thanks for all your great recipes!

Jamie August 12, 2011

Would love to be entered to win a blendtec! Heard and read a lot about them but never tried one.

Julia August 12, 2011

So excited about this! I’ve been making green monsters for my 3-yr. old son but our blender always leaves *bits* of spinach or kale, and now he’s convinced all of his smoothies will have “grass” and “leaves” in them. haha.

Anne August 12, 2011

Would LOVE to try this machine to blend up some of our basil and kale from the garden!

Jayme August 12, 2011

If I win I will definitely try to make a Green Monster!

GlowingBIL August 12, 2011

Sounds like a good blender for sneaking spinach in with my kids strawberry shakes (ya, we’re not man enough to use kale in this house)
