Morning!
Last night was a productive night. We hung the small collage of pictures, did the garbage, tax return, laundry, and uploaded albums. No time to read though. Hopefully tonight!
Last night Eric told me something that happened to him the other day.
He said, ‘Do you want the good news or the bad news first?’
‘Good, always.’
‘I think I am immune to pop.’
‘That was fast. The bad news?’
‘I drank pop today.’
I laughed.
He swallowed.
‘I was out for lunch and I bought some juice, or what I thought was juice anyways. It was some type of orange drink. I took a sip and discovered it was carbonated POP.’
He swallowed.
‘That’s no big deal, anyone could have made that mistake. Don’t worry about it! The good news?’
‘I took a drink of it and almost spit it out- it tasted so gross to me. I can’t believe I used to drink that stuff.’
He had the guiltiest look on his face I think I have ever seen. I had to smile. I don’t know what he was more horrified of: the fact that he wasn’t expecting to taste pop or the fact that he doesn’t enjoy the taste anymore! Either way, I am a proud wife. It just goes to show you how taste buds can dramatically change after just 4 months.
It also made me think about when I made the transition to a vegan diet. It wasn’t a sudden decision on my part, but one that was done over the course of a year. I slowly began to cut down meat and dairy. I craved cheese, yogurt, and eggs a lot for about 4 months and then the cravings just stopped. I now get cravings for the new foods that I eat, almost as if my body forgets what I used to eat, or better yet, maybe prefers the new diet all together.
Eric finds that he now craves drinks like orange juice and tea when he previously would have craved a pop and he says his cravings for Coke have gone away about 99% in just 4 months. For his Coke story and why he decided to kick the habit, see this post.
I asked him if he would ever drink Coke in moderation again, like at a party or dinner out.
‘I don’t think I could bring myself to drink a can.’
This morning I was a photographer fail and my camera battery died on me. I blame the ridiculously long photoshoot I had with the CSA veggies last night on the deck. The back-up battery was dead too, which I know, completely defeats the purpose of a back-up battery. It’s all good. I will have two batteries in a couple hours so I can snap my little heart out.
In lieu of not having any breakfast pictures, I thought I would show you some of my favourite Vegan Overnight Oats Parfait shots…prepare to drool!
The one on the left is the one Eric made for me on my birthday in May!
Recipes can be found on my recipe page (I update it daily!). Are you a vegan overnight oats or regular overnight oats fan? What is your favourite way to eat it?
I think my favourite way is with peanut butter banana soft serve (1 frozen banana processed with 1 tbsp peanut butter) and Classic vegan overnight oats (1/2 cup oats, 1 cup almond milk, 1-2 tbsp chia seeds, 1/4 scoop Amazing Grass chocolate amazing meal).
My second fabourite way is Cherry Chocolate VOO.

Today’s question- Have your taste buds ever changed over time for certain foods?

It is SO funny how tastebuds can change like that!! And how husbands can feel guilty over silly things :-)
Will you be at HLS, or are you just auctioning off a ticket? I so wish I could go!!
I will be there with bells on!
not with anything like coke, but i used to HATE onions…abhor. they were so gross to me! and now i cook with them all the time…the flavor is incredible! thank goodness :)
Hooray for Eric! I myself gave up Diet Coke for good 4 months ago and would also be disgusted if one crossed my lips.
While drooling through your VOO photos, I caught glimpse of your food processor. Do you mind telling me what kind you use and your satisfaction with it? I’m in the market for buying one. I think it would be awesome to have a post about your favorite kitchen appliances! I’m getting married in about a year and I need registry help! Thanks so much!
Definitely artificial sweeteners! I used to eat a Source yogurt a day, which has Splenda in it. I switched to plain yogurt with fruit and agave nectar, then a little while ago tried a Source yogurt and found it so gross. Very unpleasant aftertaste!
Also – “normal” peanut butter (aka the kind with added sugar) – I can’t touch it now after switching to natural pb.
Absolutely, my taste buds have changed over time and for the better!
Salt is pretty much verboten at home. We don’t add it to food and watch the sodium count in the limited amount of packaged food we purchase. I can definitely notice when something is too salty now!
Another one… radishes! I never could eat them before but now, mmmm!
I definitely can’t eat fast food like McD’s anymore. I did when I was a kid/teenager and loved it but nowadays I’d rather puke :(
I make vegan overnight oats all the time, usually with almond milk, fruit, and some kinda nut butter and/or coconut. :) I heat them up in the morning anyway though… hot oats are just yummier to me.
Really cute story about Eric — thanks for sharing! I still drink soda now and then (very infrequently) and it’s diet soda. I can’t believe I was ever able to stomach a full can of regular Coke!
In general my tastes are evolving to new territory that I’m really enjoying. I’m loving how flavors seem to dance on my tongue as if the food is more alive. I’m really trying to savor bites versus stuff my face ;)
Is it just me, or is your hubby looking extra lean and handsome these days? Whatever you two are doing, it’s working!
hehe I agree!
The chocolate breakfast is my favorite, they all look good though!
Absolutely my taste buds have changed!! I used to be a meat-oholic. There was nothing in the world like a huge medium-rare steak. After educating myself on the processing of meat and factory farming, I decided that wasn’t for me. Now, after being vegetarian for almost 6 months (I know, I’m still a rookie at this) I CRAVE vegetables…spinach, tomatoes, cucumber, and mushrooms right now. My reasonings for becoming vegetarian have broadened from the initial reason after seeing the effects it’s had on my life. Oh, how I love my veggies!
I really need to try overnight oats…its not like I have to really do anything, so why am I being so “lazy” about it?? :) Oh, and congrats to Eric…my Diet Coke and I have a love affair so strong its a little scary…I should probably start planning my escape!
I’ve never tried overnight oats, vegan or otherwise but I think I am going to have to soon! I actually bought bananas yesterday for the sole purpose of making banana soft serve.
My tastes have definitely changed over time. I used to refuse to eat peanut butter. What?????
My tastebuds have changed DRAMATICALLY. Things I now love and previously didn’t like (or didn’t even know I liked) – peas, brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, greens, and I’m even starting to like beets. I think no matter what your diet it is important to try things every few years. Husband just found out he now likes corn on the cob and he didn’t like it for YEARS.
My fav vegan over night oats…um, the ones in my mouth. Actually I really like classic style but with steel cut oats (I use coco or carob poweder instead of amazing meal) with banana soft serve and strawberry jam. I had the toughest time last night trying to decide between a green monster and oats for breakfast. The green monster won, and it is delicious, but it doesn’t hold me over at work like the oats do.
I just had a “you know you read healthy living blogs too much when…” moment. haha I made some peach banana softserve a few minutes ago and after tasting the first heavenly bite I said to myself, “I need to tell Angela about this combo. I don’t think she’s tried it yet!” hahaha So on that note… I highly recommend throwing in a chopped up peach with your banana sometime. :-)
I just blogged about one change the other day, the McD’s version of an oreo blizzard. I used to love those things but I tried a small one and found it totally gross. Actually everything McD’s now is just gross to me (and rightly so!), where-as a couple of years ago, not so much.
Aww, too cute, but good for Eric!!! I’m seriously impressed he did not sneak in some “pop” (hehe) at all!!
I used to eat cheese like it was my job. Now as a vegan I don’t crave it at all! It’s weird how that works.
at the risk of sounding like a total creeper…eric is looking H-O-T!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, those pictures do look amazing! I suppose, unintentionally, I am a vegan overnight oats person. I’ve only had them twice (and both times this week!) but I don’t use yogurt or milk. I only use water in my oats in general. That makes them vegan, right? Okay, have to go check the recipes!!
I don’t crave meat at all since becoming vegetarian or even fast food! It’s funny how our taste buds change. Love all of your great overnight oat photos – especially the unique dishes!
I transitioned out of the pop phase years ago and have had no real desire to go back! I enjoy drinking juices and water far more. Also, I finally made up a bowl of overnight oats with banana mushed in (the night before) for the first time last week and it’s all I can think about. Now I know why everyone loves it. I can’t even do warm oats anymore. The only problem is that I eat it so quickly!
