Hello :) I hope you are having a kick-bootay start to your week.
How precious are these ducklings and duck?!
[Source]
Not sure why, but I had the impulse to Google pictures of ducklings last night. ;) Last year we saw some in our area so I am hoping to see them again this year! So gosh darn cute.
Something else that made me smile was coming down to Vegan Overnight Oats on a Monday morning. I decided to turn the VOO into Banana Soft Serve VOO. Even though I was cold, I was just craving this breakfast again! I bundled up in my robe and dove in…
Banana Soft Serve Vegan Overnight Oats
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup oats
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1 banana, mashed
- 1/2 scoop Amazing Grass Amazing Meal chocolate powder (optional)
Directions: Whisk ingredients together and place in fridge overnight. In the morning, make the Banana Soft Serve and layer in a glass as shown.
Don’t forget the awesome nutritional stats of this breakfast too!
I also made some fresh juice this morning…
4 carrots, 1/2 grapefruit, 1 lime. It was way too tart though! Next time less grapefruit and lime, and more carrots. ;)

This morning as I was eating my breakfast I started to think about this advertising campaign that I saw earlier this year…
It is an advertisement by the National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC). You can drop your magazines into the slot to support ‘shedding your weight problem’. I originally posted about it here.
I have never seen an ad like this before and I thought it made quite a bold statement.
My question to you today is, how do you feel about women’s magazines? Do you read them? What about women’s health/fitness magazines? Are there any that stand out from the pack?
I personally used to be the magazine QUEEN. I used to buy 1-2 magazines per week! Eric says that I was addicted. I was looking for the cure to my body/weight/hair/skin problems. However, once I entered grad school, I needed to make cut-backs to save money, so magazines were among the first to go. Now I never buy them because I just got out of the habit. Last year my Father in law got me a subscription to Runner’s World, and I actually enjoyed that magazine quite a bit. It stood out from the others.
I am off for a couple business meetings this morning. Lunch may be in or out, depending on how long they go. This afternoon I am doing another huge order for Ambrosia and then also baking up my other orders. Not sure what my workout is going to be. I may have to squeeze it in over lunch or do an evening workout.
Have a great day! See you for 1,000 words this afternoon.

The new look is great! The overnight oats and soft serve look so good! Great way to sneak in your ice cream first thing this morning! I look at the magazines for information, but I don’t buy them any more. I used to have such a collection, but really it does become more of an addiction. I definitely don’t worry about fitting into the “mold” that a lot of the magazines try to push on you. Good luck with your meetings today! I hope it is a good one for you!
you know, i used to buy magazines all the time…now i aim for things like Eating Well and Bon Appetit. I find that food magazines have more pertinent information and they don’t make me feel bad because I don’t look like the person on the cover!
i really like that “shed your weight issues here” display…i think it says a lot about our awareness of where a lot of body image issues stems from!
I have found a great fitness focused magazine called SOBE Fitness. I can’t stand how SELF, Fitness, Women’s Health and the like always talk about weight loss. I also can’t stand how these magazines feature skinny models and actresses with little to no muscle tone, lifting 5lb weights! I need some real inspiration, not another 15 minute ab routine to “look good in a bikini by next week”.
I recently started subscribing to SOBE Fitness and it comes out every other month, it is full of informative articles written my scientists, physicians, and Olympic coaches and features “real” athletic men and women in its training sections. I would highly recommend it.
I used to read a ton of magazines, In Style, Women’s Health, Self, Shape…
Then I just got BORED! They are literally all the same, all the time.
I was wondering about Runner’s World though, since I am new to running it would probably have a lot of new-to-me info. Thanks for the recommend!
I read anywhere from 2-10 magazines a month, depending on how busy my schedule is. No matter what, I always try to read Self, Runner’s World, and Women’s Running. I think that a lot of them have mixed messages and can be damaging for someone suffering from body issues, but for the most part I find them to be helpful and inspiring.
I read a few, but I take them very lightly. I’d rather read books on nutrition though.
Correction the mag is called “SoBeFit”
I like Women’s Health and Men’s Health magazines!
I made the.best.VOO. for this morning!! I whipped pnut butter into the banana + layered a little jelly in there too. I’m out of chia so I used ground flax meal which worked perfectly. All the details will be blogged tomorrow. Seriously digging at my mug for more! The magazines I get right now are Real Simple and my subscription for Cooks just ended. I think I used to get Shape magazine…And I got Architectural Digest for YEARS [nerd alert…yeah started that 1 in 7th grade, lol] I usually pick up a trashy magazine when I’m at the airport though! They can be fun sometimes! There are a few other health mags that I really like too…one is Body + Soul. Anyway, off to work!
I generally don’t read women’s magazines at all. The boy buys me some for my stocking every Christmas and that is about the only time I read them. I hate all the advertisements and half the articles are crap. The only magazines I have subscriptions to are: Cooking Light, Eating Well, and Vegetarian Times. Even Cooking Light is getting on my nerves with certain ads, the sections with fitness tips, and that sort of thing. And I feel like their recipes aren’t very original most of the time but that’s neither here nor there. One magazine I really do want to subscribe to (and plan to, as soon as my Cooking Light is up) is Real Simple. I love the look of that one! I find myself leaning more towards domestic magazines – lifestyles, family, homes, decorating, etc than to “women’s” magazines.
I think that, as a form of entertainment, weelky rags do have a place. As an intelligent woman I know that the pictures I am looking at have been tweaked, photoshopped, airbrushed, etc. I also know that, for most celebrities, it is their job to look “perfect” (be it right, wrong or indifferent) and they spend a fortune in order to do so. I never buy magazines for cures or quick fixes. The big secret is that there is no big secret. You must exercise and eat healthfully to be fit. I get a kick out of poring over the gossip-y columns. It’s just fluff. My life has enough stress and serious-ness…a little bit of fluff is entertaining to me.
p.s. I really <3 your new layout!
I read a lot of women’s magazines, but often feel that they promote unrealistic body types! However I love Glamour! They provide a range of articles from fashion to world news. I also like how they’ve begun to use a variety of models in different shapes and sizes :) In recent issues, they’ve begun to focus on respecting your body and having a healthy body image!!! Yay!!
You can read about it here!

I also love Vegetarian Times.. the recipes are amazing!
I subscribe to Glamour and Self and I tend to read only those women’s magazines. As much as I enjoy getting new tips, I take lots of their advice with a grain of salt. I view magazines as escapism like I do books and movies so I view them pretty lightly. I feel like I am a fairly self confident individual so most of the time I don’t compare myself to the women in the magazines. That being said I am happy to see that Glamour is using models now with a wider range of body types. Real women do come in all shapes and sizes.
I am not a fan of women’s mags. I think it’s unfair to tote “tips” on how to become a size 6 overnight but then airbrush the models in the photos. False advertising!
I’ve never been a fan of women’s magazines… ever. I tried to be when all my friends in high school and college seemed obsessed with them but I just never felt as though they reflected much of MY life or anything about ME. I found the articles to be all about fashion and boyfriends and great sex… but the content on any of those things was so glossed over… it didn’t help you or inspire you or give you the tools to change anything about yourself really. All they seemed to want to do is to appeal to the part of me that wanted to be super-something. Super trendy? Super sexy? Super approachable?
Maybe it’s because I grew up in a small town, but the clothes the models wore, the look of the models and the articles themselves just seemed to be something to look at if you wanted to live in a fantasy world.
I stick to science magazines (I’m a science geek), and health magazines (occasionally). They speak about things I’m interested in, usually have content which isn’t fluffy and often give resources on where to go for more information. Good stuff!
I guess I sort of agree with other’s: It’s hard to say whether my body image is being affected by the stick then models in the fashion sections of women’s magazines….but I still read them and sometimes enjoy them just like I do chick flicks or beach reads….it’s fun but I take the advice with a grain of salt.
I also stopped reading those types of magazines once I got to grad school – it was a combination of being too poor to afford them and not having time to read anything non-academic. Now, the only two magazines I make time to read are Runner’s World and the Running Room magazine. :)
Sometimes Shoppers will send me Glow magazine which I’ll flip through if bored, but it mostly just seems like a giant advertisement whenever I do.

I used to flip through women’s magazines when I was in my late teens/ early 20’s. HoweverI never really got into them because they were just so over the top with “best sex tips” blah blah and I usually just rolled my eyes.
I’d read them if I was at a laundromat or somewhere that had them for free, but that was about it.
I pretty much avoid them now and even if I do pick one up, I stay completely away from any weight loss tips… I’m all about eating healthy and exercize and not about the “newest bestest weight loss tip that will help you lose 50 lbs in 50 hours!!!”
As far as what I read now, I knit, so I’ve got a subscription to a couple of knitting magazines that also have lovely inspirational articles about women and their lives through the craft. I also really like Yoga Journal, I don’t get it often but when I do pick it up I really enjoy the series of moves it gives, and the tips and tricks that are in it. I enjoy Yoga, but I’m not very good at it, and I have to be careful with it due to some previous surgeries and injuries to my joints.
I have to make some VOO… I keep looking at yours and going mmmmm… I just have the problem of having room mates who are asleep when I get up so I often pick up breakfast on the way to work rather than make it at home.
VOO seams like the perfect solution… if I just get off my lazy bum and make them the night before :)
I used to be into magazines such as Self and Women’s Health, but I came to the realisation that if they really worked, we would only need to read one magazine! (Not to mention they can get expensive). I stopped reading them, but I read Runner’s World because I love the training tips.
I rather would read a book then a magazine on the beach. :)
Thanks for the post- I am really intrigued by the NEDIC’s new advertising.
I am not into Women’s mag’s but I do LOVE Clean Eating. They have some great recipes!
