Trying Not To Drop The Ball in 2010

Where did you watch the Ball Drop?

IMG 8721 thumb Trying Not To Drop The Ball in 2010

We were in the comfort of our own family room!

We relaxed at home and watched the US vs. Canada Juniors hockey. What a great nail bitter! US dominated until the 3rd period and then Canada came back and tied it up. Canada won in a shootout. Sooooo nerve wracking!

This morning I got up (hangover free for once!) and did some work for a couple hours before hitting the treadmill for my first workout of 2010. I will be honest, I was NOT in the mood to workout on the treadmill. Our streets here are covered in ice so I literally can’t workout outdoors right now because it is so slippery. :( I opted to put on a movie and watched it as I sweated it out. It worked wonderfully and 45 mins flew by!

The workout:

  • 45 min. Treadmill hill workout (incline 15%, speed 4.0-4.2 intervals) = KILLER

Then Eric and I did Whittle My Middle 2! Eric will be my lucky victim participant this time around.

We whittled and whittled.

Wanna know how nerdy we are?

We were doing the side plank twists and we high fived each other at the top of each twist. LOL. We were laughing so hard we almost fell over!

I really ‘like’ the new exercises this time around. And I use the word ‘like’ loosely…By popular demand, I did NOT include any exercise ball exercises this time.

I did:

  • Front plank: 90 secs.
  • Side plank:  60 secs each side
  • Torso twists: 20 reps
  • Plank ups: 10 reps
  • Boat pose: 2 sets 10 reps
  • Side plank w/ twists:  10 reps each side

Leave me a comment below if you’d like to join us for Whittle My Middle 2!

After showering, I had the appetite of a football player. Well, maybe a vegan football player, that is. ;)

I made open-faced salsa and Sol veggie burger sandwiches on Mary’s Crackers:

To die for!!!!!

Along with my lucky New Year’s Black Eyed Pea Soup:

My new favourite way to eat bananas:

IMG 8744 thumb Trying Not To Drop The Ball in 2010

Frozen + on a stick = AMAZING.

I got the sticks from Bulk Barn. I cut the banana in half, stick it, and then pop it into Tupperware and into the freezer. Voila. I honestly enjoy them more than popsicles. You gotta try this!!!!

And a bowl of fruit…

Gogi berries and mulberries (I think?):

IMG 8611 thumb Trying Not To Drop The Ball in 2010

Mulberries are so strange! They have these little stems on them. I was too lazy to remove the stems off so I just ate them! LOL. Probably not supposed to though. They are really tasty in a strange and addicting way.

I wanted to go back for more food, but I decided to blog first and see if my brain caught up with my stomach. Yup, sure enough it has. :) I need to work on eating slower this year…

My new Japanese Sencha loose leaf tea:

IMG 8756 thumb Trying Not To Drop The Ball in 2010

Very good. It is 4′Oclock brand.

One of my X-mas gifts from Eric:

IMG 8779 thumb Trying Not To Drop The Ball in 2010

I know, I’m a dork!

I asked for one for work because I could never answer the phone while baking. Now I can. :) The reception isn’t great on it after about 15-20 feet away from the receiver though. It will do the trick I guess!

Speaking of baking, yesterday was a great day of sales for the new Healthy Resolutions Fit Packs! Over 400 Glo Bars were sold. I rounded up my donation amount to make an even $100 donation. I was really touched by some of your emails yesterday telling me what an important cause NEDIC is to you. Thank you so much for your support! It is a great way for Glo Bakery to start the new year. :)

I have a few hours of work left to do today. Not sure what else this first day of 2010 holds for us. Nothing is open so we probably won’t go too far. We might go to a movie later tonight (It’s Complicated or Sherlock Holmes).

Just remembered- I will also be doing the swab test today for the Bone Marrow donation registry. It arrived in the mail yesterday. :)

Updates:

Happy 2010!

Hi Angela! I found your blog about a couple of months ago and have been following it ever since! I’ve just started running, and you’ve been a great inspiration to me (It’s been a challenge for me).

I’ll definitely be joining you for WMM II! I’m really glad you’re doing a second WMM. One questions though — do your shoulders/arms ever hurt when you’re doing planks?

Angela, I discovered your blog just today, and I’m so impressed! I’m going to try your WMMII. Getting a stronger core is one of my resolutions, so now I have a guide!

I’m totally in- I’m glad you changed it to not using the ball because I don’t have one…I was going to have to improvise if you repeated the moves from last month!

Oh and you HAVE to try my momma’s version of frozen nanners! You freeze the 1/2 bananas on a stick, then you cover them in melted chocolate and refreeze them. They’re called Monkey Tails and they’re phenomenal! Just be careful… you can get frostbite in your mouth trying to wolf it down! We usually freeze an entire bunch at a time because they’re so good.

i was actually going to do the WMM #1 because i didn’t do it the first time around – SO excited (well, as excited as one can be for some ab-burning core work (: ) that you posted about doing a WMM #2! it’s so much more fun and easier to stay motivated when there are others involved.

also – for the plank-ups, in Jillian’s 30 Day Shred there’s a modification if the full plank is still to difficult: bend the knees (as if you’re doing a modified push-up) and then do the arm motions as normal. thought i’d add that tip in case anyone finds the movement a bit hard while in full plank!

thanks ange :)

Hello and Happy New Year!

Question: What is the boat pose? I want to add it to my WMM2! Help!

Also, finally tried Mary’s Crackers last might! OMG! Soooo good! Thanks for turning me on to yet another addiction, like the Green Monster :-)

I saw Holmes, it was good! Although if it was up to me we would have seen It’s Complicated instead, I’m always partial to the chick flicks – I go to movies to relax, not to get my heart pounding watching an action flick :)

Also, my dad grows mulberries and I’ve been eating them off the tree for years, feel free to eat the tiny stem it’s not bad for you.

And I’m definitely up for WMM2!

Ashley is always talking about you and so at long last I have made my way over. Great message you are sending and I am so in. Have fought the whole “weight is not a measure of health” thing since healing from Crohn’s and gaining back all the weight I lost and then some since being sick. Whole foods and holistic living is to thank but I have struggled to find an exercise routine that works for me. I tried the gym but it is just not for me anymore. Yoga-ing four times a week and hour walking 5 times a week. Do weights 1-2 but I am going to start with the abs program you have hear and ramp it up a bit in all areas. If I can heal an incurable disease, I am not inspired to use that will to achieve my newest goal which is to get as toned and energized as I can. Keep up the amazing work. You are planting seeds of greatness in all your readers~

Hi Angela! I just discovered your blog a few days ago while looking up healthy smoothie recipes. Just wanted to let you know that my roommate and I are doing the Whittle my Middle challenge, and I’m going to start blogging as well (as a way to keep track of my 2010 goals)! I actually think I will add some exercise ball things to it (or fitness orb as I call it, thanks to Dwight on The Office). Got one for Xmas last year and love it! lol

WMM 2 sounds awesome! I’m going to ring in the New Year by doing a health boot camp for all of January. My hubby is away for the whole month on training, and I’m in the midst of unsuccessful job searches so I figure I’m going to turn the negative into a positive and focus on ME. I plan on spending about one hour a day on my bike trainer watching my favorite comedies online, and gearing up for a 400 mile bike race in June!

Can’t wait to see everyone’s progress on the challenge!

Sorry! I just noticed the link! I do have a question about the boat pose, though. Your directions for the step are to hold for 30 seconds, so for Whittle My Middle how do you do 2 sets of ten reps? Two times holding for 30 seconds? Or 2 sets of ten reps of pulsing?

Thanks! :)

Angela (Oh She Glows) January 2, 2010

Oh yes, I bring my knees into my chest and back out again (1 rep) without letting my feet touch the ground :) Hope this helps!

Long time reader – but I think it is my first time commenting.

I am looking forward to participating in WMMII as well, particularly since there is no exercise ball involved this time (which means I can do all of the exercises! Yippee!!).

Also, in regards to the mulberries, it is totally alright to eat the stems. We used to have four mulberry trees on our property (three purple, one white) and still have two. The stems are perfectly fine to eat and won’t hurt you any.

Hi Angela!

Happy 2010! I actually started my year off on the right foot by participating in the Whittle my Middle Challenge. I plan on doing it for thirty days as a prereq because I plan on training for my 5K immediately afterwards!

Some of the ab exercises are so tricky, but they are fun. I always found crunches kind of boring other than the fact that they can actually do harm to the spine. But, I think I’m going to like these exercises. They seem like fun!

I’ll actually be tracking my progress in my LiveJournal. I’m not sure if you have one or not, but you’re welcome to catch my updates. :)

Happy 2010!

Yummy frozen banana. Just the banana is a healthy way to go but I get so tempted to dip. My favorite is carob or chocolate chips with crunchy chia seeds or granola coating fur crunch and fun. The play around with topping factor is endless and can be sort of healthy :)

Thank you for such a fun motivation!
I really love your blog!

OK I love that you and Eric were high-fiving each other mid-workout. Haha. So cute. It sounds cheezy, but I think it really shows how much you love each other (because you can be total and complete nerds around one another and it’s totally fine!). :)

I’m sooooo in for Whittle My Middle 2!! The first time around I didn’t need it, but I definitely do now after all the excess from the holidays :\ I love these exercises too :)

It took me a while to get used to the dried mulberries, but now I love ‘em! They are a must in my homemade trail mix now. And yes, I eat the stem too.

Hannah (Balancing on Two Feet) January 2, 2010

Love your posting about NEDIC! Getting the information out there is so so important. It gives less power to the mosters that are eating disorders.

Totally unrelated. I love mulberries! I can only find them though at Whole Foods in a super expensive trail mix. Where do you find them?

Happy 2010!!!!

Reply

AGS January 2, 2010

I started 2010 off with my second hang-over ever. Not fun.

I was thinking through the past year, and my resolutions for the coming year, and noticed just now that this is the first year I didn’t have “lose weight” on my goal list. I did lose some weight last year, and am happy with where I am, but what really gets me is that the number on the scale just doesn’t cross my mind with regard to goals. I consider that a VERY healthy change for 2010. I think OhSheGlows played a part in my gradual change of mind-set. Thanks for the encouragment throughout 2009.

Here is two a terrific 2010! I really wish you all the best, Ange. Keep up the work, the honesty, and the energy with the blog. It’s like a green monster for my emotional/mental health some days.

Hey Angela, I’m going to join WMM2 albeit a few days late :) As soon as I get some spinach back in this house I’m going to try a green monster too. Sure beats the heck out of my daily cup of coffee. Thanks for the encouragement so far and all that I am sure is to come.

Have a great year!
