All I Really Need To Know, I Learned From A Food Blogger

December 15, 2009

If you live with or have a Blogger in the family, you have probably learned a lot about blogging. Probably a lot more than you ever wanted to know. My mom told me some of the things she has learned about blogging since I started Oh She Glows 1 year ago. I wrote this list up last night and boy did we have a barrel of laughs while doing so.

IMG_1946 1. A Speed Reading course is a good idea because you will be reading…a lot.

2. Your camera must be attached to your hip at all times. This may be extra difficult if you have a SLR camera, 2 lenses, a tripod, and an external flash. You must know it’s location at all times. Oh and you better have the batteries charged too!

3. Like your camera and all it’s parts, carry a notepad and pen at all times. You need to be able to jot down your ideas whenever they strike.

4. Be prepared to eat a lot of tepid or cold meals. Eating is no longer the main objective of the meal, but getting a good shot for the blog is.

5. If you are a guest at said meal, be prepared to try to act normal when the Food Blogger is clicking away. Try not to show your annoyance.

IMG_7872 6. If you should be near a Food Blogger, you always must be camera ready. You never know when your big moment is going to arrive. Food Bloggers like to surprise you at 6am in the morning in your robe. Before you know it, your picture is on the blog for the world to see.

7. If you are a picky eater, you probably shouldn’t be friends with a Food Blogger. You will be expected to try the good, bad, and the ugly and act like you enjoyed all of it.

8. Don’t pay attention to the glares and stares when eating out with a Food Blogger. Others probably don’t understand the appeal of photographing a dinner roll.

9. Beware of using a Food Blogger’s white plate or dish. They may ask for it at any time, and you better make it turn up clean and sparkling.

IMG_0571 10. Do you think preparing Thanksgiving dinner is stressful? Try preparing it, knowing that a Food Blogger is coming to your dinner table, and critiquing the food for thousands to see.

11. Don’t be surprised when you receive blank stares from your friends when you try to explain to them that your daughter is a Food Blogger….and a vegan. They often will look at you and say, ‘Who is Blog, a new boyfriend?’

12. You don’t want to be around a Food Blogger when a recipe fails and they are on a time crunch. Quickly leave the scene, mumbling about a dentist appointment. All will be well when you return.

13. Familiarize yourself with acronyms like LOL, DH, IMO, LMAO, TTYL, BTW…FML (still not sure what that one is), but try not use them when emailing your friends. They will email you back asking you if your computer sent them a virus.

14. You need to stay up to date in the Food Blogosphere. You must not only know the names of the relevant Food Blogs, but you must be able to match the Food Blogs with the respective Bloggers.

15. You catch yourself adopting the behaviours of a food blogger. You have a strange urge to photograph your own meals when you are away from the Food Blogger and think about how proud they would be of your masterpiece.

HAHAHA. Awesome.

I need to send this to my boyfriend, he would appreciate “be prepared to try to act normal when the Food Blogger is clicking away. Try not to show your annoyance.”

#11 reminds me of my mom. I told her that I was going over to my friend’s house to watch a show that TIVO has recorded for us. Mom said “How is Tivo doing these days?” I said “TIVO is a device used to record Television shows so that you can watch them later. As far as I know it is functioning properly. My friend’s boyfriend is also doing well.” I cracked up!

When I first started blogging and I lived at home, my Mother would ask me to snap a shot of her plate. lol She was intrigued by my blogging and photography.

Omigawsh I love it!! And sooo true (and i’m not even a food blogger!) But the more I blog the more food shows up in there and I have had to deal with the cold food, and weird looks while I am taking 15 pictures of one plate of food for the perfect blog pic. OMG!
