I almost always cook up 1/2 cup oats to 1 cup liquid of your choice (usually half water/half milk). Often I'll use a whole banana as well. That definitely makes for a filling bowl :)

You should definitely try steel cut oats/look into the nutritional benefits vs. regular oats. You can make them quickly by heating 1 part oatmeal to four parts water in a pot until it boils, then letting it simmer for three minutes. After that, turn off the stove and put the lid on the pot and leave it over night - they'll be ready in the morning! Much quicker way to make these oats and I honestly couldn't go back to regular oats now.

Good luck!

You've got to try the "baked" apple technique! I loooove adding a sliced up apple, mid-stir and drizzling it with lots cinnamon, peanut/almond butter and maybe some raisins :)

I love steel cut oats. I cook them in the slow cooker and they are delicious! love the nutty texture.

1 cup of steel cut oats
6 cups of water
cook on high for about 5 hours

When I make them, I usually cook a batch for the whole week.

My favorite add ins are:

apples
walnuts
dried cranberries

apples
almond butter

canned pumpkin
cinnamon

I almost ALWAYS use 1/2 cup of oatmeal with 1 cup of liquid. It usually keeps me full for 4 hours, so it's defintely worth the extra calories (but the scoop of pb helps :D)
1/2 cup of oats
1/2 cup of water
1/2 almond milk
1 heaping tblsp of natural pb or ab
at least one serving a fruit

add first three ingredients into a microwavable bowl then microwave for 1.30-2.00 minutes! Then I add the pb (or ab), fruit, granola, cereal, dried fruit, seeds, nuts, cinnamon, pumpkin seasoning, vanilla, chocolate, whatever! I love just throwing in things from the cupboard :D

I shoveled for the first time yesterday too! It IS a great workout. Especially if you have a big/long driveway. I wore my heart rate monitor a few times last winter just to see, and if I remember right, it was comparable to a brisk walk or easy jog for the same amount of time.

Oatmeal is my go-to weekend warmth breakfast :)
