Operation OATMEAL: Get In Ma Belly!

December 9, 2009

Today was the first snowfall of the season!

IMG_7615

It was the perfect day to embrace my inner Project Snow Strength and get shoveling! The snow today was soooo wet and difficult to lift. My abs got in a killer workout which is perfect because Whittle My Middle ends tomorrow!

Here I am in my duds:

IMG_7837

I am so cool it hurts!

A sure sign you need new boots? You go to lace up your boots and the shoe lace falls off in your hand. hahaha. I’ve had these since I was 15 yrs old!!! I’m pretty sure they are going to poof into thin air one day.

IMG_7625

Here are some great tips for shoveling snow without hurting yourself.

The snow day was also perfect for a Glo Bar shipping day…

IMG_7622

With Eric’s help (he took the day off), we hit a new shipping record for one day- 80 orders went out!!!!! We went craaazy all day, but it flew by. I feel so good. My stack of orders is now much more manageable.

It was also the perfect day for…

OATMEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you can believe it, I have only made homemade oatmeal twice in my life and it made me feel sick after eating it! In university I lived off instant oatmeal. I know, I know, it’s not real oatmeal, but I didn’t even know where to start with a homemade bowl. I LOVE oats so I always knew I needed to give it another shot!

I used Kath’s classic oatmeal recipe using Bob’s Red Mill organic oats. Oh Bob, you make amazing oats. Glo Bakery is switching over to Bob’s oats- I am super pumped as I am a HUGE fan of Bob’s Red Mill products!!!!!

IMG_7589

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup organic oats
  • 1/3 cup Almond Milk
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 very, very brown banana (ooey and gooey and ewww)
  • 1/2 t organic vanilla

Directions: Throw in above ingredients into pot and simmer on medium, stirring very fast until desired consistency is achieved after about 10 mins. or so. (Note: Kath’s directions are more detailed, but I was in a huge rush today and just dumped it all in!)

My toppings included:

  • 1 Tbsp gogi berries
  • drizzle organic raw blue agave (soooo good)
  • Organic chia seeds
  • unsweetened coconut
  • Organic crunchy peanut butter
IMG_7607

The toppings were out of this world delightful!!!! I loved the raw agave drizzled over top.

IMG_7606

The only thing I was surprised with was how SMALL of a portion it made!!! It was tiny! Any suggestions? What amounts do you guys use when you make oatmeal? 1/2 cup oats vs. 1/3 cup? More liquid???

IMG_7592

Even though it was tiny, it still kept me full for about 2 hours which was more than I expected it to.

I might try adding some hemp powder to my next batch for protein.

IMG_7605

With Christmas tea.

What did I think of the oatmeal this time around?
I can’t wait to make my next batch already! I now think I am crazy for waiting this long to try it again. I think the problem with my first batch was that I made it too thick and too large of a portion. Consider me a homemade oatmeal fan for life!

When will I eat it?

I see myself eating oatmeal for lunch more so than breakfast! I know I can’t give up my morning Green Monster, but I can totally see myself making kick butt oats for lunch. Mmmm.

What does your PERFECT bowl of oatmeal look like?

Please share!

Does anyone have any savoury oats that would be great for lunch (and vegan)?

~~~~
OSGMOM arrives tomorrow. I am sooooo excited to see my mom! Wish the whole family was coming…
Peace out homies!
If you want to combine your GMs and your oats you can try making them Polly’s way http://www.yogaisyummy.net/?page_id=442. I’ve never done it (don’t have a hand blender.. even though you could probably just use a regular blender) but I would love to try oats this way!
I have a little less than 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1 heaping teaspoon ground flaxseed, 1 heaping teaspoon walnuts, 1 heaping teaspoon raisins, 1 heaping teaspoon brown sugar, and cinnamon. I add 3/4 cup water and microwave for 2 minutes. Then I add skim milk, soy milk, or almond milk. I also put some maca in mine sometimes. For a change, sometimes I use honey and natural peanut butter instead of brown sugar and walnuts.
I eat this at 5am, exercise for 1 hour, and I don’t get lunch at work until noon sometimes. It really keeps me going!
All these ideas sound delicious!
Yay!!!! Your oats are gorg.
I recommended 1/3 cup cause you said it made you too full. I bulk my up with pumpkin, wheatberries, cottage cheese, muffin, granola. You GOTTA try it with pumpkin!!! Or butternut squash puree.
Wow, that’s a lot of bars. One of these days I’ll be able to afford to try them. Maybe in the new year. I’m afraid I’ll get hooked, though. :)
I love that picture of you shoveling – priceless!! So excited for you and your upcoming TV spot, Ange. I wouldn’t be surprised if you were SUPER busy after that! You may need to expand ;)
My perfect oatmeal was my Peanut Butter Cup oatmeal that I made with fresh PB and Ghirardelli chocolate drops. Holy delicious.
My mom is coming to visit me tomorrow, too! HAVE FUN!!
I use Arrowhead Mills organic steel cut oats. It’s actually instant (6 min in microwave), which I love since I’m not much for long cooking times. I cook it in apple juice, melt vegan butter in it, and use a healthy dose of cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg. It’s delish! The next time, I plan to also stir in a little oatmeal to make it even creamier. Your version looks wonderful too!
i struggle with oatmeal too. I’m still working on trying to like it, I had it the other day but still not loving it. I will have to try some agave next time.
BTW, I’ve become addicted to your blog. You’re an inspiration, though I’m sure you don’t realize it.
I think the longer you cook the oatmeal the more it cooks down. I usually only cook mine for 7 minutes or so. The first time I made it I cooked it too long and it was tiny. I personally vary between 1/3 cup (uncooked) and 1/2 cup depending on whether I ran the day before (I’m always hungrier the day after since I run in the evening). Pumpkin oatmeal with pumpkin spice and brown sugar is a must try!
I like Scottish porridge oats – they’re a lot smoother than American oats – if that makes sense. But I have started using oat bran and love it. I make it with 1% milk and chia seeds (microwave for 2.5 minutes) then mix in all natural peanut butter and either honey or agave . . . . soooo good! My husband thinks I am weird as I always get so excited about having that for breakfast the next morning (don’t have it every day). I usually break for cold cereal (like Kashi) in the summer, but missed it too much and was back by August :)
I made shoveling part of my work out both Sunday and today. I’m not sure I’m ready for this winter thing, but I will say it is good for the abs and arms!
Oh my gosh… I LOVE oatmeal. I eat it everyday! I usually make it with 1 C soy milk (I’m thinking about trying it with Almond Milk soon!), 1/2 C oats, then once it’s done I add Stevia and 1 tbsp of Peanut Butter. Sometimes I add 1 tbsp of ground flax seed. I’ve also used Almond Butter and Sunflower Butter and they were equally wonderful :)
I eat “overnight oats” for lunch on days I am not working. The ingredients are as follows: 1 cup of old-fashioned rolled oats, 1/2 cup of apple juice, 1/2 cup of soy milk, 1 tsp of cinnamon, and a dime-sized amount (or even less) of honey.
I mix this all together and let it sit overnight, hence the name. :) It is simple-tasting but good – love it!
I make my oats with 1/3 cup oats, 1/3 cup water, and 1/3 cup vanilla soy milk with banana…just like Kath! :) I add the vanilla at the end then top with half an apple chopped up, a pinch of almonds, and a pinch of dark chocolate chips. DELISH!
Mmmmm oatmeal, my morning staple….I make mine several ways to vary the taste, but always use 1/2 cup of oats and 1 cup of liquid (usually water)…I then add milk after cooking.
My favorite way is with a wee bit of brown sugar. I also enjoy sliced up apple cooked with the oats and then sprinkle some cinnamon on top, maybe. And then of course there is the raisins with a wee bit of cinnamon as well….. And I always always top my oatmeal with a banana (I have to eat a banana a day or my muscles pay for it). This helps keep me full from 6 am until lunch time at 12:15 on work days. YUMMY>>>>>. have yet to try oatmeal with almond butter, but that may be coming up soon in my morning adventures :)
I did the same thing today. I shoveled snow with Hunni and got a great workout.
Perfect oatmeal for me is pumpkin, agave, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.
If you don’t want to miss out on your Green Monsters in the morning, but at the same time you are craving some oatmeal, why not combine the two?
Maybe some soaked oats in almond milk (or another nut/seed milk of your choice; oat milk is fantastic!) then, in the morning put them in a blender with some spinach, banana, and any other mix ins (nut butters, other fruits, etc). Top with preferred toppings (granola, coconut, wheat germ, flax) and enjoy your Green Monster Oats! :)
I always make 1/2 cup oats unless I’m adding a lot of cereal as a topping. I also always use double the liquid (so 1 cup milk to 1/2 cup oats). And adding in an egg makes it extra creamy!! So maybe you can make your flax eggs? ;-) And then I top it with nut butter and cereal/granolas!!
