Fall 2009 and Winter 2010 Fashion Trends

Happy Friday night!

It has been a long time since I have done a fashion post on Oh She Glows!

The following trend report was inspired by Fashionising.

Trend #1: Over The Knee Boots

vamp-over-the-knee-bootsBoots are on the rise and getting higher and higher. From over the knee to thigh high, the sky seems to be the limit this Fall and Winter.

How I would wear this trend:

I love tall boots. I would happily purchase a pair of boots that were just over the knee. I think that is the perfect height for boots- especially here where the snow banks are frequently knee high or more. I don’t really think thigh highs are really practical for me.

Trend #2: Ankle Boots

When I go to Toronto, it seems as if every woman is wearing some type of ankle boot! They are definitely the most popular trend right now.

How I would wear this trend:

At first glance, I did not like ankle boots and could not imagine wearing them myself, but I will admit they are starting to grow on me! Who knows if I would ever spend money on a pair though because they aren’t very practical in the wintertime.

Trend #3: Capes, Cloaks, Wraps, and Shawls

Wrap it, cloak it, and cover it. Whether you like them short and fitting or long and loose, there are a ton of wraps this season for you to select from.

How I would wear this trend:

I own a few Pashminas that I have purchased while traveling. I love them because you can dress them up or down. I used to bring them to classes or use them as a wrap for an elegant dinner out. I have never owned a cape, but I think they look really cute when they are cropped. My BIL’s girlfriend has a cute cropped cape. She wears a form fitting knit sweater or turtleneck underneath and it looks really nice with the arms peeking out.

Trend #4: Female Dandy

Prim, proper, and oh so fussy, dandy fashion is a huge trend this season. Belt it, jacket it, button it, and cap it. British fashion, high collars, tailcoats, and slim cut jackets are all ways you can make a statement. Just make sure to set your alarm extra early.

How I would wear this trend:

I love the look of this trend, but I wouldn’t climb on board. Generally, it seems too fussy for me and I don’t spend a lot of time putting together complicated outfits and getting dressed.

It also looks a bit uncomfortable. I am all about the comfort (unless that happens to be my 4" stilettos)!

Trend #5: Chunky Knits

Chunky knits can come in all forms from sweaters and jacketsil_430xN_72743619 to hats and scarves. Trends include super, over-sized clothing and slim-cut and form-fitting knits.

How I would wear this trend:

I am not a huge fan of chunky knit sweaters (I always feel frumpy in them), so I would probably wear this trend with a huge chunky scarf or hat. I love those!

Trend #6: Ripped Tights and Stockings

The Shred isn’t just for Jillian Michaels anymore. Shred it, bend it, rip it, and tear it. Fashionising suggests wearing tights with lots of shredding or you will risk looking like you had an unfortunate run in your tights on the way to work.

How I would wear this trend:

I wouldn’t.

Call me old fashioned but this is way out of my comfort zone. ;)

Trend #7: See through clothing

You have probably seen celebs everywhere wearing sheer and see through clothing to make eyebrows raise. Sheer and layered fabrics seem to be everywhere this season leaving many of us questioning how we would ever wear that in real life.

How would I wear this trend?

Sheer fabrics = beautiful. See Through? Not for me!

Trend #8: One-shouldered Dresses and tops:

This trend seems like it has been around forever now! blake-lively-onshoulder-maiApparently, we should only expect it to continue into the winter.

From swimsuits to elegant dresses, whatever piece of clothing you are looking for on top, you can probably guess that stores will have it in a one-shoulder option.

How I would wear it:

I love one-shoulder tops and dresses and I have owned a few over the years.

I find that they highlight the shoulders and arms in an elegant and subtle way without showing too much.

Trend #9: Military Trend

Gold detailing, skinny pants and military jackets are all ways you can jump on the military bandwagon this season.

How I would wear it:

I love military jackets and I am just itching to get my hands on one. However, I don’t love all of them. I would be most likely to purchase a jacket like the one above on the far left. It is cute, embellished, but not over the top.

Trend #10: Ripped Jeans and torn demin

The grunge of the 80’s is back whether we like it or not. From ripped skinny jeans to baggy hole-filled demin, there is something for the grunge in all of us.

How I would wear this trend:

I don’t know about you, but I still have bad memories of wearing jeans with holes in them in high school. I used to purposely rip holes in my knees! Oh, my poor mother!!!! hahaha. I have absolutely no desire to have this trend resurface in my closet.

I’m curious…What Fall/Winter Trends would/do you wear?

What trends are currently popular in YOUR city?

See you tomorrow. I will be telling you what GREEN costume I may sport this Halloween!

3 Trish (GirlatGym) October 2, 2009

And to think of all the ripped up tights I have thrown away! HA!! Actually, I would never leave the house with torn apart tights. I will be passing on this one.

I would like some new boots though. :-)

4 caitlin October 2, 2009

are headbands still cool? because i love headbands.

5 Leah @ Simply Fabulous October 2, 2009

I definitely think they are!!

6 Angela (Oh She Glows) October 2, 2009

I love scarves! I wish I could pull them off!

7 Leah @ Simply Fabulous October 2, 2009

I love wearing pashminas! I usually wear one everyday in the winter time. I think I have about 4 or 5 different colours. They’re great as wrap-arounds as a shawl or wrapped around the bod to make a cardigan. So I definitely love trend #3!

8 megan @ megzz wins at life October 2, 2009

Being in the city I wear pashminas a lot.. I also have lots of boots going from ankle to above the knee! I kind of love fashion so this was my kind f post!!

9 Amber October 2, 2009

I love pashminas! They are perfect in California in the wintertime instead of a coat :)

10 Rachel October 2, 2009

So jealous of this quote. If only I could say THAT in Canada!

11 Angela (Oh She Glows) October 2, 2009

haha same here! We’d have to wear 60 to stay warm, haha

12 Andrea October 2, 2009

I love the tall boots and scarves of all kinds. I am totally with you on the military jackets, too.

13 Eve October 2, 2009

This was super fun to read! I love all the boots that are in right now, but I think at 5 ft. tall I should definitely steer away from anything over the knee, unless I want to go wading…. haha! :) Something that I think I love right now (that sort of ties into military theme you pointed out!) is bomber jackets, but I can’t decide if trying to pull off a pleather one is totally gauche. Opinion? :)

14 Angela (Oh She Glows) October 2, 2009

Pleather is the way to go!! Seriously, they make some super soft and convincing pleather items now! Its all I buy :)

15 Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries October 2, 2009

Love ankle boots! And chunky knits–but agreed on the frumpiness of chunky sweaters. I love one shoulder dresses but I’m pretty busty so it looks awkward on me haha.

i love your green costume idea ;)

16 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is October 2, 2009

I hate the ankle booties last year but I am loving them this year. I have already found 4-5 pairs I want!!

17 Angela (Oh She Glows) October 2, 2009

Its funny how fashion can grow on ya, eh? It always takes me at least a season to warm up to something

18 MelissaNibbles October 2, 2009

I love the military jackets and ripped jeans. I love the dandy look. I think the key to pulling that off is to pick one piece like the jacket or skirt and wear them with a basic. The whole look together is a bit much.

19 Angela (Oh She Glows) October 2, 2009

Totally agree!

20 Mellissa October 2, 2009

I like the ankle boots, have one pair and would like another. I tend to pick one trend to dress up a classic outfit, instead of wearing multiple trends at once.

The idea of wraps and shawls is appealing but its darn cold in Minneapolis! And when its -20 a shawl just isn’t going to cut it.

21 susan from food blogga October 2, 2009

I have seen a few of the over-the-knee boots here in San Diego. Course since it’s San Diego, they’re usually paired with mini-skirts and a tank top!

22 Angela (Oh She Glows) October 2, 2009

Man wouldnt that be HOT!

23 lizzy October 2, 2009

where i live, it is all about PLAID. plaid pants, plaid jackets, plaid skirts, plaid vests, plaid plaid plaid!!

I like it in certain ways..other ways..not a fan!

24 Angela (Oh She Glows) October 2, 2009

I checked out Old Navy and they seem to have a ton of plaid too.

25 Morgan @ Life After Bagels October 2, 2009

Angela – I agree with the “I wouldn’t” to the ripped tights. I could never and would never pull this off. I’m sure my BF would not approve, he’s very fashionable.

26 Madeline @ Greens and Jeans October 2, 2009

I have been dying to try out the over the knee boot trend. I’m a smidge vertically challenged, so I’m a little worried they will overwhelm me, but it doesn’t hurt to try, right? I just got my military inspired jacket in the mail from modcloth.com today! I try to not be too “trendy” but I will hop on board if I think it will stick around for awhile. (yeah, over the knee boots probably won’t, but they are just SO killer!)

27 Julia October 2, 2009

I am with you on the shredded clothing and ripped jeans. I prefer my clothes to look nice and clean. A little distressing gives character, but tears and holes just don’t do it for me : )

28 Jess October 3, 2009

I’m pretty fashion illiterate. As in, I never have any idea what’s “in fashion” at any given moment. I don’t really buy into the whole concept. I just wear what I like and I think I pull it off most of the time, if not, no big. It’s just clothes.

Although, I’m sure to people who do care I’m a fashion abomination ;) It kind of makes me laugh.

29 Jolene October 3, 2009

I LOVE all the new trends!!! I can’t wait to go shopping ASAP!!

30 Laura @ Backstage Pass to Health & Happiness October 3, 2009

I went shopping today for a dress for a wedding that’s, um, in a few hours :-) Anyhow it’s a one shoulder minidress, and I just love how it looks! Trendy yet elegant.

31 Meghan@traveleatlove October 3, 2009

I love high boots, and they are a must-buy when we go to Europe. I find more flattering (for me) and fitted boots there than I do here in the US. I also like one shoulder tops, but end up covering them up because I am usually frozen!

32 Tay October 3, 2009

Thanks for the fashion tips Miss Fashionista!! Currently leggings with baggy shirts are popular here.

33 Nicole October 4, 2009

I am the same way with the ankle boots! At first I definitely was not feeling them, but now I love them. I can’t bring myself to buy a pair though, as I just bought two new pairs of boots this season. A pair of brown heeled boots and a pair of black flat boots, that hit right until my knee. I have a pair of black over the knee boots and I LOVE them.

I’m not down with the ripped tights. It looks too messy for me. I love patterned tights, though. I wore some grey flowery lace tights yesterday and I got so many compliments on them!

I love fashion, I could talk about it all day!!

34 Mobolo November 6, 2009

I love the new trends, especially overknee boots and capes.

35 ugg online November 24, 2009

I like those jeans with holes in them ,very cool,,still

36 Celebrity Fashion September 13, 2010

I really like the military jacket look, it would look good with a black mini skirt, leather that is….
